Engineer and product designer Ian Schon proposed creating a pen solely from metal, fulfilling the criteria of being an everyday object and a long-lasting item. He commercialized the "#01 Pen" using only metal parts milled from solid metal stock, completely omitting rubber and plastic.


The pen, characterized by its timeless design and durability, saw its initial run of 2,000 units sell out immediately in 2012, quickly becoming a sensation on social media. The pen body and refill-replacement screw are made in Boston, Massachusetts, the refills in Nevada, and the packaging in Michigan, reflecting a strong commitment to American manufacturing. It is available in five material options: aluminum, brass, bronze, stainless steel, and titanium.
