Experience the Vision of BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO Through the Art of HIROKO TAKAHASHI

Exhibition "From Disconnection to Connection" Held in Kyoto

BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO, a hostel planned, designed, and operated by UDS—the company behind facilities such as "KidZania Tokyo," "CLASKA," and "Hotel Anteroom Kyoto"—opened on December 14, 2015 (Monday) on Sushiya-dori in Asakusa, Tokyo. An exhibition offering a glimpse into the vision of BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO, through the works of artist Hiroko Takahashi, who participated from the concept stage of this hostel, handling branding, art direction, and VI (visual identity) design, will be held from November 7 (Saturday) at Gallery 9.5 in Kyoto.

The Theme of the Solo Exhibition is "Renovation"

Opening on December 14 (Monday), BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO is a hostel targeting international travelers, renovated from a 30-year-old commercial building located in a corner of Asakusa's shopping street. It is born as a new spot for transmitting contemporary and authentic Japanese sensibilities.

Hiroko Takahashi's solo exhibition "From Disconnection to Connection" is held as a related project for BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO at Gallery 9.5, a gallery space within HOTEL ANTEROOM KYOTO, also operated by UDS. This exhibition is planned to feature an exhibition structure themed around "renovation" by Takahashi, who is handling the branding for BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO.

Gallery 9.5, connected from the hotel entrance, is a highly flexible space named for its location between Kujo and Jujo. The gallery hosts special exhibitions introducing creators based in Kyoto, as well as ongoing joint projects with "SANDWICH," directed by sculptor Kohei Nawa, broadly disseminating new culture both domestically and internationally from Kyoto, a city rich in tradition and culture.

Hiroko Takahashi's Creative Space, Born Last Year

There is also a facility in Tokyo where one can experience Hiroko Takahashi's work: the "Hiroko Takahashi Oshiage Studio." Located in Narihira, Sumida Ward, Tokyo, with views of the Tokyo Skytree, this three-story studio, completed last October after renovating a former ironworks from 50 years ago, was designed by Tsuyoshi Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, at Takahashi's earnest request.

The first floor is a multipurpose space that can be used as a gallery or shop, with a shop selling "HIROKO KOLLAGE" products open on weekends. The second floor is a 30-tatami mat showroom where appointments are accepted for kimono and yukata sales and consultations. The third floor has a botanical garden and Takahashi's private space, but it is generally not open to the public.

With about a month left until the opening of "BUNKA HOSTEL TOKYO," why not take a look at the origins of this new facility, which will transmit Japanese sensibilities to the world, and consider the environment in which it was born?
