Hints for future living and choosing objects

The special exhibition 'Function and Action' will feature items curated from Kobayashi's two shops, 'Roundabout' and 'OUTBOUND', for this exhibition. Furthermore, Kobayashi's own display designs will be presented within the space of 'Go-wari Ichi-bu'.

'What is the 'use' of the objects that surround us in our daily lives? We consider 'visible, concrete functions' that create the necessary conditions to achieve a specific purpose, and 'invisible, abstract actions' that bring richness and value to the spirit of the viewer or user, or to the environment in which the object is placed. Objects inherently carry the potential for these two workings, and depending on how they are used, they sometimes function and sometimes act,' says Kobayashi about the theme 'Function and Action'.

This exhibition will showcase and sell simple, functional daily goods, while also proposing arrangements of items that allow for contemplation of their shapes, textures, and inherent qualities.

Talk event on September 11th

Additionally, on the evening of Friday, September 11th, a talk event with Kobayashi will be held. Attendees can listen in depth to Kobayashi's thoughts on the 'function and action' of various items that accompany daily life, as selected by him.

Kazuto Kobayashi
Born in 1975. Spent his childhood in Australia and Singapore. In 1999, he opened 'Roundabout', a shop dealing in domestic and international lifestyle goods, in Kichijoji, Tokyo. In 2008, he launched 'OUTBOUND', a space offering slightly more unconventional items. In 2013, he opened 'Nichijo Sekkei Kenkyushitsu' (Daily Life Design Lab) in collaboration with a lifestyle goods store in Taipei. He also engages in styling, shop production (Archivando in Shibuya, Nichijo Sekkei Kenkyushitsu in Taipei), interior direction (RICORDO in Osaka, 14g in Tokushima), and writing for books and magazines. His book 'Atarashii Nichiyohin' (New Daily Goods) was published by Mynavi.
