A Splendid World of Beauty Celebrating 400 Years of Rimpa and 400 Years Since the Death of Tokugawa Ieyasu

Exhibition "The World of Shogo Kariyazaki" Expressing Eras from Muromachi to Meiji Through Flowers

Ikebana artist Shogo Kariyazaki, described by Akihiro Miwa as "a person with hands that weave beauty." The "World of Shogo Kariyazaki" exhibition, held at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store for the first time in two years from Wednesday, July 22, 2015, unfolds a magnificent world of beauty inspired by four eras—the Muromachi, Edo, and subsequent Meiji periods—commemorating 400 years of Rimpa and 400 years since the death of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Demonstrations Held July 22, 23, and 24

Shogo Kariyazaki, internationally acclaimed for his delicate yet bold style and unique sense of color, has been actively promoting Japanese aesthetics worldwide, including solo exhibitions at the Petit Palais and in Parisian parks in recent years.

The "World of Shogo Kariyazaki" exhibition, held in the New Building 7th Floor Gallery and the Main Building 1st Floor Central Hall of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, is composed of four sections: "MUROMACHI: The Dawn of Japanese Culture," evoking the "wabi-sabi" of an era where courtly and samurai cultures merged to establish Japanese aesthetics; "MOMOYAMA: Grand, Luxurious, and Brilliant Samurai Culture," expressing the artistic dynamism of the Kanō school and the origins of Rimpa during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's unification of Japan; "EDO: Glamorous Town Culture," capturing the joy of urban culture that flourished during the 15 generations of the Tokugawa shogunate; and "MEIJI: Advancing Western Culture," envisioning a new era where Western influences began to permeate daily life with the advent of civilization and enlightenment.

From July 22 to 24 (1:00 PM daily), Kariyazaki will present a demonstration and talk show titled "Summer Vacation to Learn Ikebana" in the 1st Floor Central Hall.
