LIVING MOTIF, a long-standing design shop established in 1981, reopened in Roppongi, Tokyo, on March 19th (Thursday). Its concept is "A space where true things gather, a time to encounter the authentic."
The first-floor window space has been transformed into an event area for communication, fostering a place for new discoveries and shared values. This area will host experimental lifestyle proposals, workshops, and exhibitions, continuously sparking curiosity in visitors. The bookstore "Bibliophile" has moved to the second floor, now integrated with a workspace to create a more functional and engaging space for both practical needs and hobbies. The basement floor is dedicated to furniture, offering a curated selection that mixes styles and materials.
Takahisa Hirakata and Tomohiro Watanabe of the design office MOMENT, responsible for the interior design, stated, "The most important factor for us in this renovation was 'freshness.' We wanted to create a space that could consistently offer fresh products to our customers amidst the ever-changing lifestyles."
The redesigned first floor now includes an event space and a new display area. Utilizing the walls, it will serve as a platform to propose fresh, everyday living scenarios.
For over 30 years, LIVING MOTIF has cultivated an eye for authentic design, carefully selecting exceptional pieces. While retaining its sophisticated ambiance, the space has been reborn as a fresh environment where new values can be discovered.
Focus on Interior Stylist Masayo Mogi x Poul Kjærholm
To celebrate the renovation of LIVING MOTIF, an exhibition titled "dialogue with materials" featuring designer Poul Kjærholm will be held in the first-floor event space from March 19th (Thursday) to April 20th (Monday).
Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980) once said, "A true designer is always in dialogue with materials." He uniquely stood out in the Nordic design scene, where wooden furniture was mainstream, by using steel as a natural material alongside marble and leather. His designs, characterized by clear and perfect details, continue to be admired today.
In this exhibition, interior stylist Masayo Mogi will present Poul Kjærholm's iconic works, including the "PK22" easy chair, the "PK80" daybed, and the "PK31" sofa. Her styling will capture the delicate sensibility that coexists with the powerful design, viewed from an everyday perspective. Visitors can also glimpse the brand concept of Fritz Hansen, "REPUBLIC OF Fritz Hansen," which embodies a commitment to innovative manufacturing while preserving timeless essence and origins.
Also on display and for sale will be the ALPHABET sofa, featuring textiles from the "Kvadrat / Raf Simons" collection by Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat in collaboration with fashion designer Raf Simons, as well as a special edition model commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Series 7 chair.
Seminar by Michael Sheridan on April 2nd
In conjunction with the "dialogue with materials" exhibition by Poul Kjærholm, an opening event will include a seminar by Michael Sheridan on April 2nd (Thursday) from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM.
Michael Sheridan, an architect based in New York, curated the Poul Kjærholm retrospective at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark in 2006 and is the author of books on Kjærholm. This seminar offers a valuable opportunity to learn anew about Kjærholm's aspirations and understand the background of his enduring works. A reception will follow the seminar.
