32 Designers and Artists Present Their Works

DESIGNTIDE TOKYO, an event that reconsiders the role of design in contemporary society and fosters new trends, returns after a 12-year hiatus.
Held annually every autumn from 2005 to 2012, DESIGNTIDE TOKYO has served as a platform to showcase Tokyo's design scene to the world. The event, which has nurtured many designers and contributed to the development of domestic design culture, is finally making a comeback.
The venue is designed by architect Ryugo Itasaka. With the concept of "Fleeting Focus," and in collaboration with artist Shuntaro Yoshino, a large non-woven fabric roof covering the entire hall directs visitors' gazes and focus in various directions, creating a free space for engaging with the exhibited works.
This year's event features six directors, including Max Fraser (USA), Editorial Director of "dezeen," Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer (both UK), co-founders of "Sight Unseen," and Yורי Suzuki, a London-based sound artist and experience designer.
Works to be exhibited
Also joining as directors are Taku Sato, director of PARCEL, a rising art gallery that received the "Focus Asia Stand Prize" at "Frieze Seoul 2024," Asia's leading contemporary art fair, and Hiroshi Akimoto, director of the furniture label E&Y, which has led Japanese design culture through collaborations with emerging designers worldwide.
Works available for purchase
The venue will host an exhibition where 32 designers and artists, selected through public application and recommendation from Japan and abroad, will present their works. Additionally, a market will offer opportunities to purchase exhibited artists' past works on-site, alongside a talk program recorded live. The event aims to explore the possibilities of design needed in the current era by questioning the meaning and role of design as it evolves with societal changes.
True to its name, TIDE—meaning a turning point or trend—this design event promises to offer a glimpse into new currents and their future potential.
