Girard's Touch, Reimagined for Today. The Girard Bird, Also a Bookend

Alexander Girard, a designer active in America from the late 1920s to the late 1970s, is known for adding a playful touch to classical modernism and for his wide-ranging work, from textiles and living spaces to the total design of airlines. As part of Vitra's Spring/Summer 2021 collection, Girard's "Ceramic Container" and "Girard Bird" products have been reissued and are now available.

Following Alexander Girard's passing, the Vitra Design Museum, which manages his vast archive, has focused on reissuing his works in collaboration with the Girard family.
The "Ceramic Container" is based on wooden objects that Girard himself made on a lathe. Adapted for modern living, the material has been changed to ceramic, making it ideal for storing keys, coins, and small miscellaneous goods. Available in three colors that showcase Girard's rich sense of color—Aubergine, Ice Grey, and Cream.
The "Girard Bird" is one of the sculptural works created in the 1940s. At the time, it was hand-carved from apple wood and featured in the American magazine "Arts & Architecture."
While abstract, the form humorously captures the characteristics of a bird and stands on its own with flat planes for its legs or tail. It encourages free thinking and is also recommended as a bookend.
