“Bamboo Works: Bamboo Crafts Across Generations and Borders” Exhibition
An exhibition titled “Bamboo Works: Bamboo Crafts Across Generations and Borders,” exploring the fusion of bamboo crafts and modern design, will be held at METROCS Tokyo in Shimbashi, Tokyo, from Saturday, October 24. The exhibition will feature new models complementing Shohaku Kondo’s SK Lamp, reissued this June, and wall ornaments created by the young bamboo craft group “BAICA.”

Masters Across Generations Gather
The “Bamboo Light” series, first released by Shohaku Kondo in the 1960s and regrettably discontinued in 2008 due to a shortage of successors, has been revived this year. The techniques have been passed down to young bamboo artisans in Beppu under Kondo’s guidance, making this reissue possible.
This exhibition focuses on Shohaku Kondo, Shigeomi Ohashi (a traditional craftsman of Beppu bamboo work), and the young bamboo artisan group “BAICA” from Beppu, exploring the fusion of traditional crafts and modernism by masters spanning generations.
The Potential of Bamboo Crafts Across Generations and Borders
In addition to works by Kondo and Ohashi, the exhibition will showcase Angelo Mangiarotti’s bamboo lamp series by BAICA, and introduce the background of the creation of Isamu Noguchi’s bamboo basket chair, made by Kondo at the request of the Noguchi Foundation, along with prototype samples. Visitors can experience the “potential of bamboo crafts across generations and borders” that captivated modernist masters.

Under the guidance of Shigeomi Ohashi, participants will weave a flower basket called “Shikai-ha.” The completed basket can be taken home. Those wishing to participate must apply in advance via the website (http://www.kokuchpro.com/event/bambooworks/).
