Anne Valérie Dupond's New Exhibition "Bestioles"

French textile sculptor Anne Valérie Dupond has been active across art and fashion for over 25 years. Her style, which reconstructs animals and figures by sewing together materials like used clothing, vintage fabrics, and lace, is immensely popular in Japan.
Her new exhibition, "Bestioles," will be held at MEDICOM TOY PLUS in Omotesando Hills, Tokyo, from Saturday, November 29 to Sunday, December 14, 2025. The organizer, MEDICOM TOY, has collaborated with her since 2019, releasing nearly 100 handmade "ONE OF KIND BE@RBRICK 1000%" pieces. To commemorate the exhibition, we present her latest interview about the exhibition's theme.

113 New Works Featuring Animals and Flowers, Centered on the Theme of "Little Creatures"

Titled "Bestioles," a French term affectionately used to mean "little creatures," this exhibition showcases 113 new works, including textile sculptures of animals—her original focus—"ONE OF KIND BE@RBRICK 1000%," and brooches featuring flowers and animals.

The venue is divided into six zones: "Mer (Sea)," "Terre (Land)," "Ciel (Sky)," "Maison (Home)," "Broche (Brooch)," and "BE@RBRICK 1000%."

Some of the exhibited works will be available for purchase, along with a catalog featuring all 113 pieces, and commemorative merchandise including T-shirts, crewneck sweatshirts, tote bags, and die-cut cushions.
On Saturday, November 29, the opening day, Anne Valérie Dupond herself will be present for a demonstration of her work and a meet-and-greet event (details will be announced on the MEDICOM TOY Official Blogin late November).

Her works breathe life into materials that carry memories of everyday life. Come and experience an encounter with these "little creatures," which evoke a sense of familiarity and tenderness, at the exhibition!

— What discussions did you have with MEDICOM TOY for this new exhibition?

Anne Valérie Dupond (hereafter Anne)When I first met Ms. Izumi (Izumi Suga, Advisor at MEDICOM TOY), she expressed her desire to exhibit my work. I was deeply honored to hear that she had been interested in my art for many years. I am truly delighted that the ideas from that time have gradually taken shape and are now realized.

For this exhibition, MEDICOM TOY commissioned me to create 20 new BE@RBRICKs, an animal collection, and a series of brooches. Having created works themed around animals for over 20 years, it is a great joy and a significant milestone for me to present new pieces with MEDICOM TOY.

In creating these, I drew inspiration from the favorite animals of Mr. Akashi (Tatsuhiko Akashi, President of MEDICOM TOY) and Ms. Izumi. I am very pleased to have been able to express my respect for them through my work. That said, they gave me complete creative freedom, and their trust further fueled my artistic drive. This exhibition features a diverse range of works.

My interactions with MEDICOM TOY are always very smooth, characterized by deep trust and mutual respect. Their respect for my creative freedom allows me to work with enjoyment, and I feel truly fortunate to maintain that sense of playfulness. For this exhibition, the MEDICOM TOY team has done a remarkable job with the related merchandise, the catalog production, and the venue decoration. Witnessing each step of that process brings me great joy.

— Your collaboration with MEDICOM TOY began in 2019.

AnneIt's been a wonderful six years. I am immensely proud to work in an environment filled with trust and respect. Despite being a large company, MEDICOM TOY is always curious, playful, and generous. Mr. Akashi truly embodies a "childlike spirit," which I believe is why the brand remains so beloved. I am also deeply impressed by their open approach, offering opportunities equally without regard to an artist's fame.
There is no hierarchy or snobbery, only pure passion.

When I received the first offer six years ago, I never imagined it would continue for so long, let alone lead to my own solo exhibition. I am always deeply moved by how they approach me with sincerity and trust amidst their work with so many renowned artists. The brilliance of Mr. Akashi and Ms. Izumi, in particular, lies in their focus on artists based on creativity. I feel truly honored to be a part of their world.

MEDICOM TOY consistently embodies a spirit of "pursuing creativity." Their approach is generous, full of playfulness, and genuinely joyful. This free and warm atmosphere is entirely different from my previous image of a "large corporation." I am truly delighted with my collaboration with MEDICOM TOY and hope this wonderful adventure continues for a long time to come!

— This year also saw significant attention for your collaboration with Jun Takahashi on UNDERCOVER's Autumn/Winter 2025-26 womenswear collection, "but beautiful 4...", marking your first collaboration in 21 years. Many readers will be interested, so could you share your thoughts on working together again?

AnneMy first collaboration with Jun Takahashi was when I was very young, just starting my career as an artist. I was pregnant with my second child at the time, and that encounter felt like something out of a fairy tale. I never imagined that this "story" would continue 21 years later.

I was deeply moved when Mr. Takahashi told me he wanted to pay homage to that collection. I was truly happy and proud to be asked again. It was an unexpected and wonderful surprise.

It was an exciting and incredibly precious experience to collaborate again after more than 20 years. I have aged, and the world has changed. Yet, our paths crossing again felt almost fated.

I wasn't told anything about the new collection beforehand. The only thing I heard was that it would be "a homage to 'But Beautiful.'" Mr. Takahashi simply asked me to "create shoes for the show," without revealing any details. He told me, "I trust you, so please do as you wish." While I was incredibly happy to hear that, I must admit it also put a lot of pressure on me.

However, as I began the creation process, it became increasingly enjoyable. And strangely, the shoes I created freely seemed to resonate perfectly with the collection's garments, as if we had coordinated beforehand. For instance, I was coincidentally working on shoes themed around "birds," and Mr. Takahashi was also designing garments inspired by "birds." The synchronicity was astonishing, making it feel as though 20 years had refined our sensibilities in the same direction.

The completed collection was truly beautiful, and my heart was full when I saw the show. Looking back, I couldn't attend the show 21 years ago because I was giving birth. My daughter was born that very day. It was deeply emotional to witness the new show unfold before my eyes this time.

After that, Mr. Takahashi presented me with another challenge: a request to create many textile sculptures in a short period for a new project. When I saw some of these, specifically dresses incorporating my "organ sculptures," presented at Paris Fashion Week, I was moved to tears once again.

I am truly happy that this 21-year story continues to unfold. And I am deeply grateful to Jun Takahashi for continuing to weave this wonderful journey with me.

— To reiterate, could you tell us about the theme and content of the "Bestioles" exhibition?

AnneIt didn't take long to decide on the theme for this exhibition. That's because "animals" have always been a cherished motif for me and represent my lifelong artistic endeavor. I began making stuffed animals 25 years ago. It started with wanting to create a stuffed toy as a gift for my child. I've continued making them ever since, and they now form a significant part of my artistic practice.

Since the early days of our collaboration, MEDICOM TOY has entrusted me with reinterpreting numerous BE@RBRICKs. I thoroughly enjoy the process of transforming this "BE@RBRICK" bear into different animals. However, it's not a simple task. BE@RBRICK is a highly iconic object, so when transforming it into another animal, I must ensure the new form doesn't obscure its distinctive silhouette, retaining the essence of BE@RBRICK.

I feel a deep affection for these BE@RBRICKs, pouring many emotions into them as if they were extensions of myself during the creation process. I want to express the kind of love a child has for their stuffed toys through my work. And I always infuse it with humor. They must be creations that make me smile when I look at them.

In my works, I give animals human-like expressions. I enjoy the contrast between the "image of animals" we know in reality and the "appearance" I create. This creative process is truly enjoyable and exhilarating for me. This exhibition depicts a world where all kinds of animals coexist. It evokes memories of childhood stuffed animals, brings to mind real and imaginary creatures, and ultimately speaks to the essence of "humanity" itself.
