FLEXFORM | CEO Pietro Galimberti Interview
FLEXFORM
Masterpieces Born from a Relationship of Trust with Antonio Citterio
FLEXFORM CEO Pietro Galimberti Interview (1)
My grandfather ran a furniture factory, and my father crafted furnishings for Milan's La Scala Opera House.──Pietro Galimberti grew up surrounded by craftsmanship. He started his own furniture workshop in 1967 and founded FLEXFORM in 1970.
With Antonio Citterio, Italy's leading product designer and architect, as design supervisor, they have worked hand-in-hand to bring high-quality interior products to the world. We had the opportunity to speak with Pietro during his visit to Japan about FLEXFORM, Citterio, and Tokyo. A quiet confidence, underpinned by solid technical skill and design sensibility, emanates from his measured words.

Products Designed by Citterio Seem to Have Their Release Dates Naturally Determined
──First, I'd like to ask about Antonio Citterio. There's a story that Citterio frequented FLEXFORM even when he was a student. Could you tell us how he came to be your overall design supervisor?
Citterio's involvement with FLEXFORM began in 1974. He's a little younger than me, and we have a close relationship, dining together, talking on the phone frequently, and even socializing with our families. It feels like this trust is reflected directly in our work. Sometimes he visits our company, and sometimes I visit his office, but we don't go on vacation together (laughs).
──When Antonio Citterio's name comes up, I recall hearing that before developing a product, he conducts thorough research, including determining the release date. Was there extensive research for this collection as well?
That's an interesting question... In any case, Citterio's projects are long-term endeavors. He takes his time. Rather than carefully timing things, it might be more accurate to say that the release date is naturally determined.
──Then, I'd like to ask about this year's Salone del Mobile. The FLEXFORM booth had a black exterior, and upon entering, the earth-toned products stood out, with the contrast highlighting the texture of the materials. Furthermore, by creating a sense of spaciousness, visitors could more easily imagine using the products in their own homes. Were there any memorable episodes from the Salone presentation?
Citterio consulted with me on the booth concept, and his office handled the actual design. When I saw the finished booth, I thought, "I love it." Citterio and I only create things that we both genuinely like. As for memorable episodes from the Salone... there aren't any in particular (laughs). However, it's certainly the most important period for us.

I'm Very Satisfied with the Location and Atmosphere of the Tokyo Showroom
──I'd like to ask about the products presented in the collection. The "Morgan" chair, which was adopted by the "Bulgari Hotel & Resort Milan," was originally released in 2002. What prompted its redesign this time?
It happened to be the time for furniture replacement at the Bulgari Hotel & Resort Milan. We revived "Morgan" to coincide with that timing. Also, regarding the Bulgari Hotel, another one is scheduled to open in London next year, coinciding with the Olympics. A large number of FLEXFORM furniture pieces will be introduced there for the hotel, lobby, and restaurants.
──That sounds exciting. Changing the subject, could you share your impressions of Tokyo?
I've lost count of how many times I've visited Tokyo (laughs). It's always a city that feels orderly and clean. I also really feel that Japanese people are kind and well-educated, and the food is delicious. I always have a good impression. I'm very satisfied with the location and atmosphere of the Tokyo showroom as well.
──For my final question, what do you hope FLEXFORM furniture represents to its users?
This is a very difficult, yet simple question to answer. First, I don't want our furniture to feel out of place in a home. That relates to reliability. While it's important to surprise users sometimes, with FLEXFORM furniture, you'll never tire of it. Another thing we pay attention to is ensuring it doesn't make "strange noises." If every time you touch it, it makes an unpleasant sound, it becomes stressful. We focus on the details. FLEXFORM furniture is truly a lifelong piece once you purchase it. Please enjoy the quality and design that you can cherish for a lifetime.
──Thank you very much.
