New Ideas and Forms, Drawn Together by Tokyo

Encounters at Tokyo Midtown, the Main Venue

DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2011, held at Tokyo Midtown as its main venue until November 3 (Thursday, holiday), offers everyone the chance to experience a stimulating "space" for conversation, alongside remarkable designers, new works, and innovative ideas. New ideas and forms, drawn together by Tokyo.──Where Something Begins with an Encounter.

Don't Miss the Final Day of "TIDE TABLE"!

This year's main venue design was overseen by Sousuke Nakabo, a furniture and industrial designer. Nakabo envisioned a "white space" extending into the basement, where sunlight doesn't reach, by controlling the light. The resulting configuration creates a softly lit, expansive environment, akin to a white reflector, with a sense of calm and enclosure.

Upon entering the main venue, the compact space for "TIDE TABLE," a new content initiative, is immediately visible to the left. This series features 20 talk programs centered around a large table laden with various topics, fostering discussion and sharing among attendees, and has been met with great success at each session. It serves to connect all of DESIGNTIDE TOKYO's content, offering a rich program with a distinguished lineup that transcends genre. All programs are open to anyone with admission to the main venue.

A highlight is the panel discussion on November 3 (Thursday, holiday) from 14:30 to 15:30, titled "DESIGNTIDE and Venue Design: A Conversation Among Three." Participants include Makoto Tanijiri (architect), Ryuji Nakamura (architect), and Sousuke Nakabo (product designer), all of whom have been responsible for the main venue's design in previous years.

"TIDE FOCUS": Works by Three Invited Artists

"TIDE FOCUS" is a special exhibition that conveys DESIGNTIDE TOKYO's message for the year, aiming to evoke awareness and insight through the presentation of works by domestic and international artists from diverse fields, selected for their unique perspectives. This year's featured artists are Daito Manabe + Motoyuki Shima from Japan, Mika Tolvanen from Finland, and Vahakn Matossian / Vahakn Art & Design Studio, London from the UK.

"TIDE EXHIBITION": The Core Main Exhibition

The "TIDE EXHIBITION" is where designers' new ideas and works are presented with the highest level of precision. It's also an opportunity for designers, manufacturers, buyers, and journalists from Japan and abroad to gather and hear directly from the creators about the background and concepts behind their exhibited pieces. Beyond this main exhibition, approximately 30 "TIDE EXTENSION" venues are hosting unique events, including new product launches, collaborations between designers and companies, and displays of creators' works.

"TIDE MARKET": Enjoy Talking, Connecting, Buying, and Using

For example, prototypes and works that were presented in the "TIDE EXHIBITION" last year can be purchased at this year's "TIDE MARKET." This market, where you can handle products and buy them directly from the designer, serves not only as a place for exhibiting and selling works but also as a venue for market research for designers. Don't hesitate to strike up a conversation.
