The Watanabe Residence: An Open-Style Living & Dining Room (Part 1)
A family of four lives in a 124-square-meter new house.──When the Watanabe family, who live in Shizuoka, moved into their new home, their primary consideration was how to comfortably live in an open-style living and dining area. They consulted Yuka Ota, an interior decorator from BoConcept, with the desire to utilize the space effectively and for the whole family to enjoy it spaciously. How did Ms. Ota approach this challenge?

A Spacious Room Born from an Ideal Relationship Between Space and Furnishings
──What were the Watanabe family's initial requests for this project?
It all began when the Watanabes fell in love with BoConcept's 'Occa coffee table with storage.' As this was a new detached house and they sought consultation from the planning stage, we didn't follow the typical order of selecting furniture after deciding on the floor plan. Instead, we started with a lifestyle interview to understand 'how they wanted to live.'
──So, each family member had specific requests?
Yes. The wife's requests were: 1) A floor plan that allows the family of four to always feel each other's presence. 2) A bright and welcoming living and dining (LD) area, where they spend most of their day, filled with light and air. 3) Ample storage space integrated throughout the home. 4) A layout that facilitates household chores.
The husband's requests were: 1) A structure where the children, as they grow older, will always interact with someone from the family in the LD before going out or upon returning home (he did not want stairs leading directly from the children's rooms to the entrance). 2) A personal space where he could relax within the house.
Based on these points, we used BoConcept's simulation software to lay out furniture in their ideal (virtual) space. We then presented a concept that allowed them to visualize their future life surrounded by these furnishings, saying, 'This is the kind of life that awaits you in a space furnished with these pieces.'
Later, to see the actual furniture we proposed, they visited our nearest store. We made minor adjustments according to their budget, but essentially, the furniture we initially proposed was approved almost as is. Following this, the architectural design of the house, perfectly accommodating their chosen furniture, began.
──That sounds like an ideal process. What were your impressions when you saw the actual space, Ms. Ota?
I was deeply impressed when I visited their newly completed home. The furniture blended beautifully with the house, creating a harmonious, bright, and comfortable space where I could envision the family's smiles. Furthermore, there were no areas where the 'space felt too small or too large for the furniture size,' making the entire area feel more expansive than it actually was.

Why the Emphasis on Armchair Placement?
──What were the key points in creating the Watanabe family's living room?
We arranged the furniture with consideration for the impression it would make on visitors entering the living room, as well as for the family's ease of living. We kept the line of sight unobstructed from the entrance hall towards the living room, placing nothing in the extension of the corridor. Our aim was to draw the eye directly to the camel-colored 'Squilla chair' positioned by the living room window. This armchair, with its premium leather and comfortable, spacious seating, was proposed as the husband's personal relaxation space. It's not only a design icon of BoConcept but also a symbol of the Watanabe residence. We focused on this placement, imagining the first impression it would create for visitors.
On the wall facing the living room, we created a space (wall shelf) for displaying cherished items like family photos. The television is positioned in the area furthest from the strong southwest sunlight (to prevent glare from the light). The 'Morini sofa,' perfect for a close-knit family of four to relax together, also serves as a partition between the kitchen and the living room. We selected furniture that enhances the sense of space through its storage capacity and color scheme.
──The wall cabinet is also functional and effective, isn't it?
By installing the wall cabinet and the coffee table with storage, we enabled ample storage for everyday items used in the living room, such as children's toys, TV remotes, DVDs, and magazines.
To avoid making the space feel cramped, we chose a white for the wall cabinet that matched the wall color. White reflects light, brightening the entire room. Furthermore, we used walnut for the coffee table and dining table, creating a warm atmosphere.

Interior Coordination Techniques from a Professional
──What should we keep in mind when coordinating our own living rooms?
By utilizing the room's shape and creating efficient living flow, it becomes easier to decide on furniture placement.
In a long, rectangular living room with the dining area at the front and a balcony at the back, placing the sofa, table, and TV stand parallel to the long wall creates a sense of depth, making the room appear more spacious and allowing easy access to the balcony. Regardless of the room's shape, BoConcept's 3D software can simulate layouts if you provide the dimensions. We encourage you to consult with us at your nearest store for advice on optimal furniture placement.
──I see.
If the sofa is where you spend the most time in the living room, it's best to choose a sofa that is large enough for you to lie down on or for family and friends to sit together, even if the room is small. Opting for a smaller sofa due to space constraints can ultimately lead to discomfort.
Instead, consider prioritizing. For example, choose a compact dining table, or forgo a coffee table in front of the sofa and opt for a smaller side table instead. This approach helps in making furniture choices.
──So, it's about focusing on one element.
Choosing furniture in simple colors not only prevents boredom but also makes it easier to incorporate seasonal accents with cushions and other decorative items. 'Playing with accessories' means redecorating according to your current style preferences or enjoying color coordination. When there's a visual connection between colors, the space tends to look tidier, even if it's a bit cluttered.
For instance, try placing a patterned rug with a variety of colors under a plain gray sofa. By picking two or three colors from the rug's pattern and arranging cushions in those shades, you can create a cohesive look. Furthermore, by matching the colors of artwork on the walls, flowers on the table, or the cover of the topmost book, with the colors used in the rug and cushions, even scattered books and magazines can appear as part of the overall coordination.
──What are the characteristics of BoConcept's interior coordination?
As a brand originating from Denmark, our furniture is characterized by its simple design and high functionality. We offer many items that make effective use of limited space, such as extendable tables and height-adjustable tables that can serve as both coffee and dining tables.
Regarding layout and color coordination, our experienced staff provide advice in-store using 3D simulation software. We offer a wide range of furniture for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and workspaces, as well as interior accessories that incorporate the latest trends, enabling total coordination to create a unified look throughout the home.
