A Space Where Artistic Creativity Meets Toshiba's Vision for Light

Challenging the Emotional Potential of LED Lighting

Following "Overture" in 2009 and "Lucèste" in 2010, this year marks Toshiba's third exhibition with "Luce Tempo Luogo <Light, Time, Place>". At the Milan Salone, the design festival currently underway in Milan, Toshiba's installation began on the 11th. On this press preview day, numerous media representatives from Italy, Japan, and around the world visited, with exclamations of "Moved by the beauty," "Fantastic!" and "Molto bella (Wonderful!)" heard throughout, making for a highly successful preview.

An Installation of Light Using LED Lighting Fixtures

For their third consecutive year of participation, the venue's creation was handled by the Paris-based, globally active architectural collective "DGT (DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE/ARCHITECTS)", centered around a multinational trio: Dan Dorell (Italy), Lina Ghotmeh (Lebanon), and Tsuyoshi Tane (Japan).

The venue is the "Cortile di Via Savona" in the Tortona district. This is a building over 100 years old, with only its walls remaining, typically used as a parking lot. Toshiba and DGT jointly selected the site, and by exploring the building's unique characteristics and history, they pursued the diverse expressions, beauty, and potential of LEDs to create three distinct spaces.

Among these, the third space, named "INSIDE," received the most focus. Multiple water curtains, their appearance constantly shifting through countless LEDs, create an illusion of being inside a grand kaleidoscope, resembling diamond dust or a rain of light.

In addition, the installation offers diverse spatial experiences, including "ENTRANCE," where a single beam of light extending from the ceiling into a water channel on the floor creates a tunnel of pure white, and "COURTYARD," where sunlight during the day and LEDs at night illuminate the water's surface, reflecting onto the remaining walls. Personally, I highly recommend experiencing the "COURTYARD" after sunset, to witness the majestic form of the walls, fantastically illuminated by the ripples of the water.

Toshiba's installation runs until April 17th at 9 PM. For those visiting Milan during the exhibition period, why not experience a new value of light in a moving and refreshingly cool space?
