Removes 99.95% of PM0.1-sized particles (ultrafine particulate matter)

"PM2.5," often featured in news reports due to health concerns, refers to particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less (a micro is one-millionth of a meter). Dyson's research, however, focused on particles even smaller than PM2.5, generally with a diameter of approximately 0.1μm or less (nanometer size).

Toby Saville, Dyson's Senior Performance Engineer, who visited Japan for the announcement of the "Dyson Pure Cool™ Fan with Air Purifying Function," stated, "Ultrafine particulate matter exists invisibly in the air, and it is said to affect more people's health than other harmful substances."

"The air contains various substances such as diesel exhaust, tobacco, soot, heavy metals, and harmful organic compounds. Every day, 10 liters of air pass through our nose, mouth, and lungs into our bodies. The finer the particles, the greater their potential to harm our health, and airborne particles can cause allergic reactions and inflammation," he explained.

Ultrafine particulate matter at the PM0.1 level, smaller than PM2.5, can enter the bloodstream, circulate through the body, and potentially cause serious short-term and long-term illnesses.

Thus, the "Dyson Pure Cool™ Fan with Air Purifying Function," which can be used as a fan, circulator, and air purifier, was born from the idea of utilizing Dyson's Air Multiplier technology for purposes other than heating and cooling.

Dyson's First Air Purifier is Born

Furthermore, Ola Papirkooska, Dyson's Senior Design Engineer, commented, "The development of this fan with air purifying function began with the creation of a high-performance filter capable of capturing ultrafine particulate matter that can harm the human body."

Two years and 450 prototypes were developed to reach completion. The core of the air purification system is Dyson's proprietary 360° Glass HEPA filter. This HEPA filter, made by folding 6.45 meters of filter material 254 times, removes 99.95% of PM0.1-level ultrafine particulate matter. It prevents particles from entering the lungs and uniformly and quietly delivers purified air throughout the room.

The filter is effective for one year with 12 hours of use per day. Filter replacement is very simple, and its small footprint means it can be used in various locations, which is also a welcome feature.

Dyson's First Flagship Store Opens in Omotesando on Friday, April 17th!
