Motion-sensing wristband "UP™"
Jawbone, headquartered in San Francisco, is launching the "UP™" motion-sensing wristband in Japan on Saturday, April 20th. This innovative tool, designed to support a healthy lifestyle in conjunction with its dedicated app, has already generated significant buzz in the U.S. following its early release on March 20th, thanks to its sophisticated design and unique features.

Named "UP™" for "getting up and moving"
Prior to the Japanese launch of "UP™," a media briefing was held for key media outlets. My notes from that event describe it as a "digital tool that visualizes habits and improves lifestyle."
The feature that most captivated me during the product description was "sleep tracking." By switching UP™ to sleep mode before bed and syncing it with a smartphone in the morning, one can record the "quality" of their sleep. This quality is detailed through data such as the time it takes to fall asleep, the balance between light and deep sleep, time spent in bed, and the number of awakenings during the night. The information is remarkably detailed and presented in a highly understandable visual format.
For instance, understanding sleep depth can prompt individuals with suspected sleep apnea to consciously try to improve sleep quality. It also encourages efforts to average sleep duration or find ways to fall asleep more quickly. Furthermore, UP™ offers convenient features like the "Smart Alarm," which uses silent vibrations to wake you, and "Power Nap" for daytime naps, allowing users to discover optimal timing within their sleep cycles that they might not be aware of.
A sophisticated wristband computer that comfortably fits your wrist
Other functions allow users to review data on the balance between daily activity and rest, exercise intensity, steps taken, distance walked, and calories burned. Users can also create meal logs by taking photos of their food with their smartphone, scan barcodes on food packaging, or search for nutritional information in a database.
It also allows users to record their "mood of the day" and provides highly personalized insights based on the analysis of recorded data.
JORGEN NORDIN, Jawbone's Head of Product Development, who presented the product at the media briefing, explained, "UP™ enriches users' lives. It's a sophisticated wristband computer that synchronizes with the sensors embedded in the band and the user's smartphone. By leveraging data stored in the cloud, it offers various 'life prompts' to the user throughout their day. The case is made of smooth, hypoallergenic medical-grade rubber, and its waterproof and splash-proof construction allows for all-day wear, day and night. The battery life lasts up to 10 days."
A tool for setting goals, understanding data, and striving for daily life improvement
At the heart of UP™ lies the "Motion X® Engine" (patented), a culmination of years of technological innovation and advancement in biomechanics, the study of human natural movement. The iOS app (version 2.4) now supports 11 languages, including Japanese, while the Android™ version is currently available only in English (as of April 8, 2013).
In Japan, it will be available from Saturday, April 20th, at major electronics retailers and Apple Stores. For the latest information on retail partners, please visit https://jawbone.com/retail-partners#!13/JP.
