When it comes to cameras that captivate photographers worldwide, regardless of their professional status, the name that immediately comes to mind is that of Germany's esteemed optical instrument manufacturer, Leica Camera AG. Recently, Leica Camera AG has opened its doors to the world's first store dedicated to professionals and high-end amateurs: the "Leica Professional Store Tokyo," located in Ginza.

Inspired by a Creative Space of Photography and Art

The "Leica Professional Store Tokyo" is Leica Camera AG's first new space for professional and high-amateur photographers. It is located on the second floor of the building that houses the familiar Leica Ginza store, a well-known spot for Leica fans in Japan. Unlike the entrance to the Leica Ginza store, access to the second floor is via elevator.

The "Leica S System," a professional digital camera announced by Leica Camera AG two years ago, is a medium-format digital camera that boasts the same size and operability as a 35mm full-frame digital camera. It features a lineup of lenses with superior optical performance, termed "Leica Quality," optimized for the Leica S System. Furthermore, it incorporates a newly designed image sensor with an aspect ratio of 3:2, identical to that of the 35mm Leica. This store is a space where one can fully experience this innovative camera, which inherits the tradition of Leica cameras while revolutionizing every aspect, in the best possible environment.

The store showcases the full lineup of Leica's medium-format digital SLR camera, the Leica S System, as well as the traditional Leica M System (current models), lenses, and accessories. It also features the high-performance, German-made compact digital camera, the Leica X1. A photo shooting space equipped with lighting facilities is also available, allowing visitors to test-shoot Leica cameras in optimal conditions and even print their images on-site.

Additionally, it functions as a photo lounge, featuring exhibitions of works by professional photographers who favor Leica cameras, such as the Leica S2. The space is also slated to host events and seminars for Leica users.

Alfred Schopf, CEO of Leica Camera AG, also attended the recent opening event. He described the new store format as a "creative space for photography and art" and revealed plans to expand to 10 to 15 stores in key cities worldwide.

The first floor of the existing Leica Ginza store will continue to be dedicated to product sales of current Leica cameras. The newly opened "Leica Professional Store Tokyo" will offer a distinct experience for professionals and high-amateur users, centered around the Leica S System. Naturally, after-sales support is also comprehensive.

It was in 1914 that Oskar Barnack, the founder of Leica cameras, repurposed 35mm cinema film for a small camera, creating the prototype for what became known as the Leica format. Over a century later, this marks the birth of a space for Leica cameras—which continue to captivate professional photographers globally—and for those who value photography, art, and beauty. It is a testament to the enduring essence of Leica.
