The history of Britain's ANGLEPOISE, often considered the originator of the spring-balanced desk stand, traces back to 1855 when Herbert Terry and his three sons established Herbert Terry and Sons, a spring manufacturing company.

In 1932, George Carwardine, hailed as a genius engineer, developed the first Anglepoise lamp, characterized by its spring mechanism that allowed light to be directed in any direction. Subsequent improvements led to the introduction of the "Original 1227," featuring three springs.

Years later, in 2003, industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange breathed new life into the original Anglepoise, introducing the "Type" series with a contemporary aesthetic. In addition to the stationary desk lamp, optional parts allow it to be used as a floor lamp or desk clamp.

In 2009, to commemorate Anglepoise's 75th anniversary and honor the legacy of George Carwardine and the brand, the "Original 1227" was reissued. Simultaneously, it was selected as one of ten designs for the Royal Mail's "British Design Classics" stamp series, earning recognition as a quintessential British design.
