Outdoor Works Unfold on Mt. Uryu on Campus
Ryue Nishizawa, along with Kazuyo Sejima, is part of the architectural unitSANAAwhich is active both domestically and internationally. In 2010, they received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, often called the Nobel Prize of architecture. Furthermore, just at the end of last year, the Louvre-Lens, a new building for the Louvre Museum in France designed by Nishizawa, opened its doors.
Meanwhile, the design firm nendo, led by Oki Sato, presents works across a wide range of fields, from architecture to products. Last year, their "Coca-Cola Bottleware", tableware made from Coca-Cola bottles, garnered significant attention. In 2012, they were awarded "Designer of the Year" by Wallpaper magazine and the Elle Deco International Design Awards, respectively.
This exhibition is part of the latest program for the "Entrance Lounge Exhibition" series. Kyoto University of Art and Design annually invites prominent Japanese architects active on the global stage. "We hope this exhibition will allow visitors to experience our educational philosophy through the creations of these globally active, leading Japanese figures," stated the university.
The exhibition extends beyond the conventional entrance lounge space to include outdoor works on Mt. Uryu within the university campus. Viewing the outdoor works is by guided tour only, with two tours scheduled per day.
Ryue Nishizawa and Oki Sato are scheduled to attend the opening reception on the exhibition's first day, Friday, October 4th. Participation is free and does not require advance booking. This promises to be a rare opportunity for architecture and design enthusiasts.
