A Giant Dinosaur Fossil Appears at the MUJI Tokyo Midtown Entrance
Artist Mitsuru Koga is known for his intriguing practice of giving new meaning to existing objects, such as meticulously carving stones found on the beach into small vases.
This summer, he just concluded a solo exhibition at the Los Angeles gallery “tortoise,” which centered on a series of paper-cut artworks where fallen leaves were finely cut and shaped into miniature trees.
Previously, he created an approximately life-size dinosaur fossil using driftwood washed ashore in Chigasaki, and published the photo collection 『Driftwood Dinosaurs』 (published by UTRECHT).
This time, in place of driftwood, he has recreated dinosaur fossils using MUJI items.

The selected products range from bath goods like buckets to kitchen tools, a hairdryer, an umbrella, and stationery.
Mr. Koga himself remarked while assembling the dinosaurs, "It feels like a summer vacation free study project," but the result is a display of impressive quality that far exceeds expectations.
To accompany the exhibition, MUJI BOOKS has curated and is offering a selection of books that can inspire flexible thinking when it comes to hands-on creation, alongside Mr. Koga's own art collections.
Please come and see the large dinosaur fossil that has appeared in the heart of the city.
