A Phantom Collaboration with Disney

This installment features my eternal princess, Snow White.

When I think of her, it’s not the princess from the original Grimm fairy tale, but the vibrant, radiant figure from Disney’s animation. Surely every girl has dreamed of being like her at least once? I was one of them. I remember my first watch was a Snow White with a red band.

Snow White was released in 1937 as the world's first feature-length animated film. It’s said to be the work Walt Disney gambled his entire fortune on. His passion for the project is evident in his meticulous approach, even establishing his own school to retrain animators and teach them to study human movement from scratch. In 1939, alongside the familiar Oscar statuettes, he was also awarded seven smaller Oscars, modeled after the dwarfs. It’s a charming anecdote.

These Vitrock kids' bowls, produced by Anchor Hocking at Disney's request, were released around the time Snow White was re-released in the 1950s. Incidentally, the mold created solely for these bowls was scrapped just four years later. The title on the bowl, “Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” rendered in the film's font, is captivating even to those who aren't Disney fans.

A Joy for Adults Who Were Once Children

Around the same time, Anchor Hocking Glass also released a series of tumblers. There were eight varieties featuring Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs—Snow White, Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, and Dopey—making them collector's items that inspire the desire to complete the set.

The “Snow White” tumbler reads, “Over the seven jeweled hills, Beyond the seventh fall, In the cottage of the seven dwarfs, Dwells SNOW WHITE, Fairest one of all!!” Each of the dwarfs is also introduced with a unique phrase.

Walt Disney once said, “Everyone’s a child once.” Perhaps drinking from these tumblers now, as adults, is one of the pleasures of growing up.
