A Simple Question: Is Orange Halloween's Image Color?
Tracing Halloween's origins, we find it began as an ancient Celtic harvest festival in present-day Ireland, a religious observance to ward off evil spirits. As it traveled with immigrants to America, it was celebrated as the eve of "All Saints' Day," a Christian feast, hence "All Hallows' Eve." This is said to have evolved into "Halloween."
Originally White and Black, Orange Became the Color in America
An essential element of Halloween is the "Jack-o'-lantern," carved from a large orange pumpkin. "Jack" is the name of a wicked character from Irish folklore, said to have been barred from both heaven and hell after tricking the devil, condemned to wander the dark path forever with a lantern. It is believed that spirits are guided by this light during Halloween, repelling evil spirits.
However, it's surprisingly little known that this pumpkin was originally a "turnip" in Ireland. When Halloween was brought to America, pumpkins, which were readily harvested, took its place. If we follow the original meaning, perhaps white and black were the original image colors, before orange became associated with the holiday.
While ghost stories are a summer tradition in Japan, Halloween fills that role in America.
How about a haunted house for adults, or a creatively themed Halloween party at one of New York's many clubs?
