Part 3: Jaime Hayón's New Mediterranean Baroque (1)
In January, a new collection from Spanish porcelain maker Lladró was unveiled in Paris, generating considerable buzz. The theme was 'Re-Deco'.
These pieces are precisely as the title suggests, modern reinterpretations of Lladró's past masterpieces. The artist behind this collection is Jaime Hayón, who was appointed Lladró's Art Director in 2006. Over the next two installments, we will introduce Lladró's work and Jaime Hayón.
Re-Deco: Reinterpreting Luxury Porcelain
Jaime Hayón is pronounced 'Hy-may Ah-yon' in Spanish.
I couldn't hide my surprise when I heard that this designer, in his early thirties, had been appointed director of a luxury porcelain brand. It was remarkable that a leading Spanish brand would choose someone who, until a few years ago, was virtually unknown and was still in his early thirties.
Previously, Hayón had released ceramic works for manufacturers of high-end bath and toiletry products, such as BD Barcelona. Initially, I thought his creations would only be suitable for that luxury market. The January unveiling completely defied that expectation.
The approach taken was to reinterpret Lladró's iconic porcelain works. This demonstrated the breadth of Hayón's talent, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one impressed.
An exhibition was also held in May at the select shop Colette in Paris, drawing attention from the fashion industry as well.

The installation at Paris Maison&Objet in January of this year.
The styling, as well as the products themselves, was superb.
