#01 "GAME"
Good books come from honest publishers. Because they only create books they love.
This was a reminder of something obvious when you think about it, from the Swiss publisher Nieves. This publisher, which has released works by such distinguished artists as Kim Gordon, Mike Mills, Takashi Homma, Daniel Johnston, and Larry Clark, is run almost single-handedly by Benjamin Sommerhalder, who lives in Zurich, handling everything from planning and editing to design and sales.
Nieves, which originally made "zines" by simply stapling copied works together, has now finally progressed to making hardcover, full-color photo books. Yet, the criterion for creating a book still seems to be, not whether it sells or not, but simply whether they like it or not. Just as records have their own colors depending on the label, I hope to introduce publishers one by one, starting with this one, with the idea that their selection criteria for books will become their own distinct identity.
The first one, of course, is Nieves.
The setting for the latest photo collection by Peter Sutherland, a promising photographer who gained sudden fame with his documentary photo and video collection "Pedal," which followed messengers in New York, is Manhattan, New York.
Soccer fields surrounded by fences. The members of the Chinatown Soccer Club divide into two teams and aim for the goal for about an hour every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, starting at 9 AM.
The club members include locals like the artist himself and Mark Gonzales, office workers before their shifts, and youths of unknown identity. Their professions and races vary, but they gather with only the commonality of loving soccer. Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, they display fresh expressions and vibrant movements.
The personal photographs, which hint at a subtle narrative, invite the viewer inside the fence.
