NOOKA | Matthew Waldman Vol. 36: The Innovator Who Created drip.fm

Effortlessly Bridging Music and Visual Art

Vol. 36: The Innovator Behind "drip.fm", Samuel Valenti IV

Samuel Valenti IV's independent record label, "Ghostly International," takes its name from Sam's DJ moniker, "DJ SpaceGhost." The ghost-themed logo is perfect not only for music but also for T-shirts and art-related accessories. They are available for purchase from the STORE on the official website (http://ghostly.com/).

Do You Know "Ghostly International"?

Matthew (M)First, could you briefly introduce yourself to the OPENERS readers?

Samuel Valenti IV (S)Since founding the music label "Ghostly International" in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1999, I've been discovering and promoting talented artists. In 2012, I co-founded "drip.fm," a subscription-based music distribution service that directly connects creative labels with their fans.

MGhostly is truly a remarkable record label. What inspired you to start it?

SThank you. I felt there was a need for an American label with a diverse perspective on electronica, and also for visual artists who could collaborate within the same sphere.

"You Can't Hear What You Can't See"

MBranding seems to play a significant role in your success. What are your thoughts on design as a visual language?

SI really like the expression, "You can't hear what you can't see." We work with incredible creators who are active in both music and visual art because the synergy they create is more tangible.

For example, by connecting Michael Cina and Shigeto, they have released numerous wonderful collaborative works, supporting each other in the most ideal way.

Visual Art and Music Recommendations?

MYou're known as an innovator among entrepreneurs. Could you tell us a bit about "drip.fm"?

SI'm not sure if I'm considered an innovator, but we are always exploring unique ways with drip.fm to deliver the work of the artists we collaborate with to a wider audience.

The concept behind drip.fm is not only to make all music from Ghostly easily accessible to fans but also to bring them closer to the artists. We pour our passion into creating an environment where fans can directly and easily support artists.

MIn the realms of visual art and music, who are you currently enjoying?

SI'm listening to Forest Swords, Mark E, Matrixxman, and Lord Raja. In visual art, we have Matthew Shilian, Michael Cina, Sougwen Chung, Andy Gilmore, and Will Calcutt, among others. We have a wealth of incredible artists right now that we're eager to share with the world.

MFor OPENERS readers, it's familiar that I interview friends in this column. Do you have any anecdotes you'd like to share about NOOKA or me?

Matthew Waldman | Samuel Valenti 04

SI learned about Matthew Shilian through his incredible design work and really wanted to meet him. I sent an email but didn't get a reply. Then, a few months later, he invited me to his office, and we hit it off. He has an astonishingly vast collection of toys, and overall, he knows a great deal about people, culture, and life. He's a truly talented and good friend.

MThank you! I'd love to hear more stories from you again.

SYes, please reach out again when you have the chance.
