Vol. 27: Frieze Art Fair NYC, May 2012

I attend art fairs every year, but for the past two, the scale of the fairs has become overwhelming, leaving me exhausted just from visiting. As events grow larger, profit inevitably becomes more important to organizers than the quality of the fair. Consequently, I've recently started attending only the parties at art fairs. However, 'Frieze Art Fair' is an exception!

Me, dressed for the art fair, is at the very bottom!

Initially, I was hesitant due to the inconvenient location (it's accessible by subway and bus, but a 9km bike ride from my home!). Nevertheless, I changed into my art fair attire, got on my bike, and headed towards 'Randall's Island,' a place I hadn't visited before. I discovered that you can indeed cycle across the 'Triboro Bridge,' offering a truly magnificent view. Upon arriving at 'Randall's Island,' I met up with friends and proceeded into the art fair.

After meeting my friends, we were all hungry, so while waiting in line for a popular New York food kiosk, a photographer from 'New York Magazine Cut Blog' captured my art fair attire and featured me in an article. A great start! But just like art, observing the people at an art fair is also enjoyable. Lunch from 'Kimchi Taco Truck' with a view of the river.

The art fair venue was impressive, both inside and out. I had never seen such a large tent before; it must have been about a kilometer long! Inside the pristine white tent, natural light from above created a comfortable atmosphere. Beyond the excellent environment, the exhibited works were on par with museum collections, unlike at typical fairs. It featured many pieces by masters like Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, KAWS, Anish Kapoor, and Ai Weiwei, alongside a rich selection of emerging artists. With a sculpture garden outside the tent, delightful bars and food kiosks, and a setting abundant in nature, the art was superb. The audience also experienced a truly wonderful art encounter. I'm already looking forward to next year.
