The Way We Live with “STYLE”

Living Notes: Part 13

“SOVA, Multi-Combination Bedding Linens” (1)

We want to liberate the world of the bedroom into a realm of play and challenge within interior design!──“A Declaration of Self-Expression in the Bedroom!?” We launched the proposal-based bed furnishing brand “SOVA” with the hope that it would become one breakthrough for this very purpose.
We adopted “SOVA,” a word meaning “to sleep” in Swedish, as our brand name. Our concept is a world that accommodates single purchases, impulse buys, and even gifts, while allowing you to enjoy a multi-combination interior world.

Expressing Yourself in the “Bedroom” Can Be Cultivated from Childhood

In Western countries, interior coordination is a readily accessible field for self-expression, and the “bedroom,” along with the kitchen, serves as a major stage for this. People change the colors and patterns of their linens, and the materials, according to their preferences and the season. The budget and energy dedicated to this coordination might even far exceed that spent on clothing.

Some people want to be enveloped in an abundance of pillows and cushions of various sizes, while others stylishly pursue the “ultimate” with a sharp, minimalist sensibility.

The world of interiors can be seen as a “learning ground for comfortable living,” where one gains experience and makes mistakes from a young age to try various stylings for one's own comfort. Ideally, if children could have their own private spaces from a young age and enjoy the training of creating their own worlds within them, wouldn't the Japanese interior market become richer and deeper? When I'm at airports in the United States, I often see young people with their pillows strapped to their luggage.

“SOVA” is a Bed Furnishing Brand

“SOVA” encompasses a world of materials, from coverings, blankets, duvet covers (bedspreads), and quilt cushions, to towels, knits, and organic cotton.──It is a bed furnishing brand that aims to convey its original worldview by mobilizing all items, including beds, mattresses, duvets, and more.

Here, the most keen challenge is undoubtedly “color and pattern.” Color and pattern belong to the realm of personal preference, and the difference between hitting the mark and missing it here can determine the brand's future. SOVA's first objective was to make the retail space, the stage for the bedding itself, bright, cheerful, and dynamic, a risky but important goal.

The pattern motifs come in three types: “Alphabet,” “Origami,” and “Garden Pop.” To complement these distinctive motifs, we offer standard patterns like “small dots and large dots” and “stripes” that are easy to coordinate.

In many cases, combinations were mostly of solids and patterns, but we deliberately moved away from solids. To highlight the individuality of the bold motif patterns, we offer solids in quilt coverlets, quilt cushions, and blankets, expanding the possibilities for combination. Many items are reversible, which is also a feature. Since the duvet covers are reversible, the scope for combination further broadens. By experiencing the joy and novelty of combining, perhaps the richness of everyday, casual moments will also increase?──“May every morning be bright… with anticipation for such mornings.”

In the late 1980s, the brand “ESPRIT” achieved a stunning world of bed linen coordination. ESPRIT, whose headquarter was in San Francisco at the time, was driven by an incredibly unique concept rooted in the fusion of three worldviews: the policy of its advertising and graphic design department, the blend of Italian innovation and Japanese delicate sensibility (※The CEO was Italian, and the art director was Mr. Tamotsu Yagi), and the perfect natural environment of California. (If my memory serves me correctly, the furniture design using aluminum and stainless steel was by Mr. Shigeru Uchida.)

Super Colorful Harmony That Invokes Energy for Tomorrow

Indeed, the bedding designs brought a fresh and striking impression, as if synchronized with the open and transparent light and wind of California. From around that time, I believe I realized that bedding is not just a tool for sleeping at night, but also an interior design element to be enjoyed for its color and pattern harmony under the bright daylight.

People often say that Japan's housing situation is different from that of Western countries. However, when I think of the minimalism of the Zen world, where it was said, “Half a tatami mat when standing, one tatami mat when lying down,” the aesthetic of neatly folding a pure white futon into three sections and placing it in a corner of the room, with a pillow set upon it… within that, an unparalleled and overwhelming worldview must have been quietly conveyed.

Although “SOVA” is a product of materialism, the antithesis of Zen, I sincerely hope that its bright, super-colorful harmony can transform into energy for tomorrow, becoming a subtle backdrop to the daily lives of those who use and love it… As a designer and as a user, I can't help but feel this way these days.
