Test Drive the New Bentley Flying Spur

The new Bentley Flying Spur, unveiled in June 2019 and making its Japan premiere on December 4th. We test-drove the third-generation model, which adopts the latest platform shared with the new Continental GT, in Monaco.

Bentley Transformed Since the Arrival of the Bentayga

Looking back, I believe Bentley changed significantly before and after the arrival of the Bentayga SUV. Prior to that, Bentley's models were built around design and craftsmanship befitting their status, along with engine power. Of course, this approach was a marketing success, achieving global hits and undoubtedly forming the foundation of Bentley today.
However, considering the Continental GT's debut was in 2004, its basic plan and design date back nearly 20 years. It's undeniable that the aging was becoming apparent in the latter stages of the second-generation model. The Bentayga added the latest electronic devices and interfaces, making it competitive even when compared to rivals in the same price range.
And I believe the third-generation Continental GT has become a top runner in its class across all metrics. It features a newly developed platform that extensively uses aluminum composites for lightness and rigidity, and is equipped with the latest electronic systems. Its refined driving dynamics go without saying.
The Flying Spur, introduced here, is based on that third-generation Continental GT. Simply put, it's a four-door version with a 130mm longer wheelbase. As the third generation, it follows the established principles.

A Ride Quality Like a "Carpet of Clouds"

So, how does it perform? We took it for a test drive at the international press event and are here to share our impressions.
The venue for the test drive was Monaco, a fitting backdrop for Bentley. The course was set starting from the world-renowned Hôtel de Paris. Including the previous evening's presentation, dinner, and time spent at the bar, we were enveloped in the world of the new Flying Spur. It was a carefully orchestrated experience that truly conveyed its status as a car for the elite.
Its defining characteristic is an even more comfortable ride than before. While I had no complaints with previous Flying Spurs, the new model is clearly superior. To put it simply, the ride quality is like a "carpet of clouds."
Of course, this doesn't mean it's merely soft. On smooth highways, it glides effortlessly, but when encountering bumps in the city, the cabin moves and you can hear the suspension working.
However, the input felt through the seat is always gentle, and all impacts are absorbed in a single motion with no secondary oscillations. Perhaps the air suspension is virtually performing ultra-long-stroke damping. The vibrations are noticeably less than what the visual information and the brain's anticipation would suggest.
Yet, during cornering, it exhibits a decidedly sporty demeanor. This is the moment you're reminded that Bentley is a driver's car brand.

Agile Handling That Makes You Forget It's a Four-Door Saloon

The body's response to the light steering feel creates a sense of unity that makes you forget this is a four-door saloon. I was particularly surprised by its agility in tight corners. The rear-wheel steering allows it to pivot with a tight turning radius, changing direction with remarkable ease. This maneuverability is truly impressive.
At this point, I had selected the "Sporty" drive mode, but overall, I would recommend Bentley's suggested "B" mode. While "Comfort" is also pleasant on the highway, the "B" mode, which automatically controls these settings, felt the most smooth and convenient.
When you think about it, it's only natural to be satisfied when the development team has set it to what they believe is "the best." After all, it carries the Bentley badge.
The engine is a 6-liter W12 twin-turbo TSI. It produces a maximum output of 635ps and peak torque of 900Nm. Its top speed of 333km/h is also in a special realm. The ability to drive this high-spec unit both sportily and elegantly is truly remarkable. Including its appearances on the roads of Monaco, it is undoubtedly a special vehicle in the world.
Deliveries of the new Flying Spur are set to begin in Europe and other regions early next year. Its arrival in Japan is expected around springtime. Will it capture the hearts of Japanese celebrities? I'm personally very curious.
