BMW's Second Cruiser Model, the R18 Classic, Arrives
BMW has begun accepting reservations for the new R18 Classic, a model in the cruiser segment, at BMW Motorrad.
Style of the Legendary R5 Meets BMW's Most Powerful Boxer Engine
The R18 Classic, inheriting the tradition of historic BMW motorcycles, arrives as the second model following the R18, the flagship of the cruiser line. This model combines classic design with modern technology.
Drawing inspiration from legendary models like the R5 for its technology and design, it is powered by a newly developed 1.8-liter two-cylinder boxer engine, also known as the "Big Boxer," which is the most powerful in BMW's history. Producing a maximum output of 67 kW (91 hp) and a peak torque of 150 Nm – the highest for a production motorcycle – it comes standard with three riding modes: "Rain," "Road," and "Rock," which can be set according to the rider's preference.
The suspension's centerpiece is a double-loop tubular frame, a BMW tradition. Similar to the R5, a genuine style is adopted for the rear swingarm, bolted around the rear axle transmission.
The suspension intentionally omits electronic control adjustment functions. Instead, it achieves high wheel control and comfort by directly attaching a telescopic fork at the front and a stroke-dependent damper spring preload-adjustable central suspension strut at the rear.
Also, similar to the R5, the telescopic fork tubes are housed within the fork sleeves. The fork tubes have a diameter of 49 mm, with 120 mm of suspension travel at the front and 90 mm at the rear. The braking system is equipped with twin disc brakes at the front and a single disc brake at the rear. Both are combined with 4-piston fixed calipers, and wire-spoke wheels create a stylish appearance.
The price for the R18 Classic is 2,801,000 yen. The "First Edition," commemorating its launch, is 3,262,000 yen. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-March 2021.
