Nissan Unveils the New "Z" Sports Car—Evolving as an "Accessible Sports Car" Like Its Predecessors | Nissan

Powertrain: 3.0L V6 Twin-Turbo with 405 hp

A core characteristic of the "Z," inherited from the debut of the first model in 1969, is the connection the driver feels with the car, regardless of the road. Hiroshi Tamura, Chief Product Specialist for the new "Z," commented, "Our goal was to create the best "Z" ever. The "Z" has always evolved, providing exciting driving by stimulating human instincts. The new "Z" is not only powerful and agile but also aims to be the ultimate 'dance partner' by enhancing the sense of unity with the driver."
The newly developed "VR30DDTT" 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine produces a maximum output of 405 hp and peak torque of 475 Nm at 5,600 rpm. While significantly increasing power, it achieves sharp and smooth responsiveness.
The transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 9-speed automatic. The 6-speed manual has been reinforced with strengthened clutch discs and gear trains to handle the high torque of the VR30DDTT engine. Furthermore, the adoption of a newly designed synchronizer system and revised shift profiles enable smooth gear changes that respond precisely to the driver's intentions.
The newly developed 9-speed automatic transmission offers a wide gear range for direct and rapid response. It features a standard mode ideal for commuting and long highway drives, and a sport mode that maximizes the car's potential. The sport mode includes faster acceleration control and dedicated settings for the steering and VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) to provide agile handling on winding roads.
Additionally, for the first time in a Nissan rear-wheel-drive vehicle, an advanced launch assist control system is equipped (on all AT models and only on the "Performance" MT grade) that maintains engine speed through clutch operation to maximize acceleration potential from a standstill.
In terms of dynamics, body rigidity has been enhanced, and the adoption of rack-assist type EPS and wide front tires contributes to a 13% improvement in cornering performance, delivering responsive handling at high speeds and during cornering.
New large-diameter monotube dampers have been adopted for both front and rear suspension. By reducing damping force by approximately 20% compared to the current model, shock from road imperfections is lessened. Simultaneously, the high responsiveness inherent to the monotube design improves road tracking, resulting in excellent handling stability. The aluminum double-wishbone front suspension geometry has been revised, including an increased caster angle, to enhance straight-line stability.
The new "Z" for the US market, scheduled for release in Spring 2022, will be available in two grades: "Sport" and "Performance," along with a limited edition "Proto Spec" of 240 units. The "Proto Spec" features exclusive yellow brake calipers with Z logos, bronze-colored alloy wheels, and yellow-accented leather seats with yellow stitching throughout the interior. The Japanese market version, the "Fairlady Z," is expected to be announced in Winter 2021.
