More Stylish, More Comfortable
The first-generation CrossPolo was released in September 2006. Its distinctive styling, highlighted by the signature "Magma Orange" color, captured attention and made it a popular model among both men and women. In the Japanese market, it accounted for 15 percent of all Polo sales, with over 3,500 units sold in the three years since its introduction.
The new model is based on the Polo released in October 2009, which also featured a 1.2-liter TSI engine. Like its predecessor, the new CrossPolo boasts a unique and innovative design for both its interior and exterior. Replacing the 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine and 6-speed AT, it now uses a 1.2-liter TSI single-charger engine paired with a 7-speed DSG. This combination offers both fuel efficiency and high performance, improving fuel economy by approximately 30 percent, from 14.4 km/L to 18.6 km/L in the 10-15 mode test.
This, along with its "Four-Star" low-emission vehicle certification, makes it eligible for eco-car tax reductions (50 percent reduction) and purchase subsidies. The potential to receive up to approximately 320,000 yen in purchase incentives is also likely to encourage buyers.
A Distinctive Design That Turns Heads
In addition to its fuel efficiency, the Polo's slightly raised suspension allows for nimble driving in the city. Its most defining characteristic, however, is the highly fashionable exterior and interior design. The CrossPolo-exclusive bumpers, styled like silver under protectors, the black wheel arch extensions and side skirts surrounding the lower body, and the silver roof rails and door mirrors all contribute to its SUV-like styling.
Furthermore, the 17-inch large-diameter alloy wheels emphasize its active character. Volkswagen Group Japan describes it not merely as an SUV-styled vehicle, but as a model that "crosses over" the Polo's inherent safety, quality, comfort, and functionality with a "playful spirit."
A special website opened on the launch date, June 29, 2010, followed by the "CITY×CAMP" promotional campaign. Accessing the virtual campsite on the Twitter-based virtual "CITY×CAMP," which began on July 12, offers a chance to win entry to a real event at Roppongi Hills on September 18, as well as other prizes. This innovative promotional campaign allows fans to experience the joy of participation as the virtual and real events "cross over."
With the introduction of the CrossPolo, Volkswagen Group Japan aims to further enhance the Polo's appeal, declaring 2010 as the "Polo Year" and focusing on establishing the Polo as a leading model in the imported compact car segment.
