A Racing Finish Distinct from the Standard Model
The exterior features modifications focused on aerodynamic performance, notably a newly designed front bumper and an adjustable large rear wing. An air intake is positioned on the center of the hood, and wide front and rear fenders, along with a diffuser, have also been installed. Air intakes for cooling the rear brakes can also be seen on the side skirts.
Lightweight construction is achieved by using carbon for main components and polycarbonate for the side and rear windows. The engine remains standard due to regulations (maximum output 571 hp/6800 rpm, maximum torque 66.3 kgm/4750 rpm), but the reduced weight allows for a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 3.7 seconds, slightly surpassing the base vehicle. The transmission is a 6-speed sequential. While the transaxle layout is inherited from the production model, the propeller shaft has been changed to a carbon type also used in the DTM.
The suspension has also been upgraded, with the double-wishbone system allowing for fine adjustments to damping force, ride height, stabilizer, and camber angle. Composite steel brakes and racing ABS have been adopted, and the rack-and-pinion steering is a direct ratio, speed-sensitive type, reportedly improving handling.
The cockpit features a steel roll cage, racing bucket seats, a 6-point seatbelt, and a carbon fiber center tunnel (with layout for switches controlling engine start, traction control, reverse gear, fire suppression system, brake balance, etc.), along with an HANS system to protect the head and neck. A center display that concentrates various information such as speed, engine RPM, lap times, and gear position is also equipped, creating a racing atmosphere that leaves no trace of the original.
Development of the SLS AMG GT3 is ongoing, with sales scheduled to begin this fall after obtaining FIA homologation. Its performance in the 2011 season is highly anticipated.
BRAND HISTORY
When tracing the history of automobiles, we arrive at two Germans, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, as pioneers. It goes without saying that these two men, independently creating gasoline-powered automobiles between 1885 and 1886, laid the foundation for the automotive society. Their respective automobile companies were at times seen as rivals, but to overcome the recession after World War I, they joined forces, and Daimler-Benz AG was established through their merger in 1926.
The name "Mercedes" given to the products originated when Emil Jellinek, a customer of Daimler's, named them after his eldest daughter in exchange for taking over sales outside of Germany. The trademark was registered by Daimler AG in 1902.
Thus born, Mercedes, and subsequently Mercedes-Benz, has consistently led the times as a driving force in automotive development, actively introducing the latest technologies such as the safety passenger cell, airbags, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), and Night View.
