The base model for the GTI isa major minor change, which arrived in Japan last summerlanded in Japanthe new "Polo". Incorporating Volkswagen's latest design trends,Golf, it now sports a more aggressive front end.

The new Polo GTI is equipped with a 1.8-liter TSI engine, replacing the previous 1.4-liter TSI. While the previous model featured two superchargers (a supercharger and a turbocharger), this new model adopts a single turbo system with a small turbine that responds nimbly from low RPMs. It delivers 192 ps, an increase of 12 ps over the previous generation, while also achieving improved fuel efficiency of 17.2 km/ℓ (JC08 mode), a 4 percent gain.

The exterior features a dedicated bumper with large air intakes on both sides. The radiator grille, with its traditional GTI honeycomb structure, is adorned with a single red line and a "GTI" badge. Combined with a dedicated rear spoiler and chrome-finished dual exhaust pipes, these elements emphasize its sporty nature.

The suspension is a sport setup, 15mm lower than the standard model, and it rides on newly designed 17-inch wheels. Volkswagen claims it offers a supple ride on ordinary roads and a tenacious grip on winding roads.

The interior also adheres to the "GTI" tradition, featuring tartan check seats. The piping on the seats, the leather three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, and the door sill plates are all designed to inspire the driver.

The new Polo GTI is available in four body colors and is priced at 3,342,000 yen.

At the time of its announcement, the transmission was the familiar 7-speed DSG. However, a long-awaited manual transmission model is expected to be introduced in Japan by the end of the year. Perhaps influenced by the strong sales of the manual "S1" model offered by Audi Japan, a group company, this announcement is welcome news for MT fans in Japan.

As stated by President and CEO Shigeru Shoji at the company's New Year's press conference in January, "As the number one imported car sales company and a comprehensive automobile manufacturer, it is our duty to include MT models in our lineup." This suggests that the compact hot hatch market, while niche, is poised for growth.
