A Front Face Nearly Identical to the Golf 6
Its most distinctive feature is the front mask. By making almost all parts, including the bumper, grille, and hood, new, they have succeeded in achieving a front face that is almost identical to the Golf 6, which has begun delivery in Japan. The rear retains the image of the previous model, but has undergone minor changes such as a full-color bumper and altered taillights.
Looking at the interior, it achieves a quality comparable to the new Golf by using the climate control panel from the Golf 6, a multi-function display, a shift-up indicator, and the latest design three-spoke steering wheel. Additionally, though optional, 'Park Assist' and 'Rear Assist' are newly available.
The engine lineup initially includes four gasoline models: a 1.4-liter inline-4 with two output options (80ps and 102ps), and a 1.4-liter inline-4 turbo 'TSI' with two output options (122ps and 160ps). For diesel, the common-rail turbo 'TDI' is adopted, with two models available: a 1.6-liter inline-4 (105ps) and a 2.0-liter inline-4 (140ps).
Delivery in Europe to Begin in September
In terms of environmental performance, the 122ps gasoline engine model achieves a European combined cycle fuel economy of 15.9 km/l (16.7 km/l with DSG) and CO2 emissions of 139g/km. The 160ps model achieves 15.6 km/l (16.4 km/l with DSG) and CO2 emissions of 143g/km. For diesel, the 105ps model records 22.2 km/l and 119g/km of CO2, while the 140ps model achieves 20 km/l and 132g/km of CO2. Incidentally, all engines adopted this time meet Euro 5 emission standards. Volkswagen announces it as 'one of the most economical and cleanest wagons in Europe'.
The grades are differentiated by using different seat materials, with three specifications available: 'Trendline', 'Comfortline', and 'Highline'. The top-tier Highline features a combination of Alcantara and fabric. Delivery in Europe is scheduled to begin in September. With prices starting from 18,500 euros (approximately 2.43 million yen) in Germany, it can be considered quite a bargain.
