Fuel Economy Reaches a VW Record of 16.8 km/L
The Volkswagen Golf, a benchmark in the C-segment in Europe, enters its sixth generation. A full model change after only five years from the current model is an unusually rapid pace.
While the platform is carried over from the fifth-generation Golf, all body panels except the roof have been newly designed. The already well-regarded body rigidity and chassis performance have been further enhanced for this release.
The engines offered are a 1.4-liter single-charger (122ps maximum output, 20.4kgm maximum torque) and a 1.4-liter twin-charger (160ps maximum output, 24.5kgm maximum torque). The single-charger will be equipped in the "TSI Comfortline," and the twin-charger in the "TSI Highline."
The transmission paired with these engines is a 7-speed DSG. Both models show improved fuel efficiency compared to the current version, with the "TSI Comfortline" achieving a VW record of 16.8 km/L. (The TSI Highline records 16.2 km/L.)
The New Face of Volkswagen
The exterior adopts a new approach, abandoning the W" badge grille and connecting the new-shaped headlamps with a wide grille. This simple yet powerful horizontal design evokes the first-generation Golf. This design will be adopted for future new models, undoubtedly becoming the new face of Volkswagen.
The interior gives the impression of further refinement, building upon the foundation of the current Golf. The instrument panel area features chrome-bezelled circular meters and a leather steering wheel, also seen in the Passat CC, further enhancing the already well-regarded quality. Leather seats with an optional 8-way power driver's seat are also available.
Safety features have also been enhanced, with the addition of a knee airbag to the existing eight airbags, making nine airbags standard. New technologies have also been incorporated, such as acoustic sensors that detect the sound emitted by the body upon impact to optimally deploy airbags and seatbelt tensioners.
The VW Golf VI has evolved in every aspect. The announced prices are 2.75 million yen for the TSI Comfortline and 3.12 million yen for the TSI Highline.
