Sized Between the Current CLK and New E-Class
The new E-Class Coupe's exterior is fluid and sporty, evident in the three-pointed star on the grille and the rear fenders, which take inspiration from the flowing "pontoon" fenders of the 1955 S220. While information about its chassis being based on the new E-Class sedan unveiled in Detroit, and the shape of its headlamps and tail lamps might suggest many shared elements with the sedan, its body is actually newly designed.
At 4696mm long, it is 172mm shorter than the sedan, and at 1786mm wide, it is 68mm narrower. Its height of 1392mm is a full 78mm lower, and the wheelbase is 112mm shorter. This places its dimensions squarely between the current CLK and the new E-Class sedan.
Sales in Europe Begin in May
The engines are shared with the E-Class sedan. Gasoline models include the "E250CGI" with a 1.8-liter inline-4 turbo (204ps maximum output, 31.6kgm maximum torque) and the "E350CGI" with a 3.5-liter V6 (292ps maximum output, 37.2kgm maximum torque), both employing direct injection. The "E500" is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 (387ps maximum output, 54kgm maximum torque). Diesel models feature the "E250CDI" with a 2.2-liter inline-4 twin-turbo (204ps maximum output, 51kgm maximum torque) and the "E350CDI" with a 3.0-liter V6 turbo (231ps maximum output, 55.1kgm maximum torque).
Furthermore, all models except the gasoline E500 come standard with the "BlueEfficiency package," which pursues fuel efficiency through factors other than the powertrain. Notably, the diesel E250CDI achieves a low fuel consumption of 18.9 km/L in the European combined cycle.
Advanced safety features, common to the new E-Class sedan, have also been incorporated. Inside, the instrument panel is exclusive to the coupe, and the rear seats feature a distinct two-seat configuration, a hallmark of the coupe. Similar to the sedan, grades will include "Avantgarde," "Elegance," and the "AMG Sport Package."
The new E-Class Coupe will be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show starting March 5th. Sales in Europe are scheduled to commence in May. With the introduction of the E-Class Coupe, the CLK will be removed from the model lineup.
