MINI's 5-Door Version Officially Unveiled

A second body variation has arrived for the new "MINI," which had its world premiere in November 2013, as a production model. This is a 5-door model, created by extending the wheelbase of the 3-door hatchback, which has been on sale in Japan since April, and adding rear doors.

The First 5-Door Hatchback Model

The creator of MINI,announced on Alec Issigonis' birthdaythe third generationnew "MINI".which made an early appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 2013, andofficially went on sale in April. The second model variation to arrive for this new MINI is the 5-door version, the first non-SUV model to feature five doors.

The new model, aptly named "MINI 5 Door," has a body size of 3,982mm (4,005mm for Cooper S and Cooper SD) in length, 1,727mm in width, and 1,425mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,567mm. Compared to the 3-door, it is 161mm longer and 11mm taller. The wheelbase is extended by approximately 72mm.

In terms of length and width, it is similar to the Volkswagen"Polo", the Alfa Romeo"MiTo", and the Citroën C3, but it is about 20-40mm lower in height.

The expanded body creates more space in the rear, with a rear seat equipped with three-point seatbelts for three passengers. Compared to the 3-door, headroom is increased by 15mm, and shoulder room is expanded by 61mm. The luggage capacity also increases by 67 liters to 278 liters, and with the 60:40 split rear seats folded down, up to 941 liters of cargo space is available.

The exterior design follows that of the 3-door MINI, including the hexagonal front grille, round headlights, and flared wheel arches. The side view, with the newly added doors, features a window line that tapers towards the rear, adding a sense of dynamism.

LEDs are available as an option for the distinctive round headlights, with the fog lights also optionally available in LED. If LEDs are selected for the headlights, the taillights will automatically be LEDs as well.

At launch, three solid colors and nine metallic colors are offered. The roof and door mirrors can be changed to a white or black contrast free of charge, the same as the 3-door. Roof rails are also available as an option for carrying luggage on the roof.

Lightweight alloy wheels are standard: 15-inch for the Cooper and Cooper D, and 16-inch for the Cooper S and Cooper SD. Up to 18-inch wheels can be fitted as an option.

Four Powertrain Options

Initially, the powertrain options will mirror those of the 3-door, with a total of four models: two gasoline and two diesel. All are equipped with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology and comply with the European fuel economy standard, Euro 6.

The "Cooper S" is powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum output of 141 kW (192 hp) and a peak torque of 280 Nm (300 Nm with overboost). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds with the manual transmission and 6.8 seconds with the automatic. Fuel consumption is 5.9 L/100km (5.5 L/100km for the automatic), which translates to approximately 16.9 km/L (18.2 km/L for the automatic) in Japanese notation.

The other gasoline engine model, the "Cooper," features a new 1.5-liter inline 3-cylinder engine, making its debut in the new MINI, producing a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp) and a peak torque of 220 Nm (230 Nm with overboost). This model boasts fuel efficiency of 4.7 L/100km with the manual and 4.8 L/100km with the automatic (approximately 21.3 km/L and 20.8 km/L, respectively).

The "Cooper SD," equipped with a common-rail direct-injection 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder diesel engine operating at a high pressure of up to 2,000 bar, delivers a maximum output of 125 kW (170 hp) and a substantial torque of 360 Nm between 1,500 and 2,750 rpm. While achieving 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds (7.3 seconds for the automatic) and a top speed of 207 km/h, it also offers the environmental benefits of a diesel engine with fuel consumption of 4.1 L/100km (approximately 24.4 km/L) and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km (107 g/km for the automatic).

The "Cooper D," the cleanest model with a maximum fuel consumption of 3.6 L/100km (approximately 27.8 km/L) and CO2 emissions of 95 g/km, produces a maximum output of 85 kW (116 hp) and a peak torque of 270 Nm. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h takes 9.4 seconds with the manual and 9.5 seconds with the automatic. The top speed is rated at 203 km/h (202 km/h for the automatic).

For all models, the transmission options are a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Steptronic automatic. A 6-speed Steptronic sport automatic is also available as an option for the Cooper S and Cooper SD, which shortens shift times and includes paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

This 6-speed automatic transmission is linked to the car's navigation system to optimize shift patterns based on the road ahead. For example, on roads with a series of tight curves, it will hold a lower gear during the short straights between corners to avoid unnecessary upshifts before the next turn. This results in improved driving pleasure and enhanced fuel efficiency.

From Sporty to Eco-Friendly

For driving dynamics, MINI Driving Modes are available as an option. The standard mode is MID, but switching to SPORT via the rotary switch or selector adjusts the steering and automatic transmission shift patterns for a sportier feel. In GREEN mode, air conditioning control and the gear shift indicator are optimized for economy. Furthermore, in automatic transmission models, the drivetrain can be disengaged between 50-160 km/h when the accelerator pedal is released, allowing for coasting in neutral to improve fuel efficiency.

The suspension features a strut-type suspension at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear, optimized for the 5-door configuration. The optional Dynamic Damper Control allows for switching between comfort and sport settings.

The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, which enhances driving stability and safety, includes ABS, EBD, CBC (Cornering Brake Control), Brake Assist, as well as Start-off Assist, Brake Drying, Brake Fade Compensation, and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control).

When DSC is switched off, the Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) is activated. This system improves handling by applying the brakes to the spinning wheel and distributing torque to the opposite wheel during cornering.

The electromechanical power steering system incorporates a function to suppress torque steer. Additionally, the Cooper S and Cooper SD models feature a Performance Control system that counteracts understeer tendencies at the limit, maintaining neutral handling through corners.

Latest High-Tech Features

For safety, similar to the 3-door, optional Driving Assistant features include active cruise control with stop & go function using a camera, and collision warning with automatic braking. It can also recognize speed limits and no-passing signs, displaying them in the cabin, and automatically control high beams.

Additionally, in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, sensors activate, and a pyrotechnic charge instantly lifts the bonnet slightly to prevent a direct impact with the hard engine block.

A Head-Up Display is also available, which can be positioned in front of the driver. This screen displays information such as speed, simplified navigation, collision warnings, detected speed limits, vehicle status reports, and the titles of the currently playing radio station or song, all without requiring the driver to take their eyes off the road.

MINI Connected, which integrates with smartphones, is also available as an option. It goes beyond simple connectivity and screen operation, enabling various functions through information exchange with the car's onboard computer and navigation system.

Unlike the"MINI Clubman Concept"unveiled at theGeneva Motor Showin March, the "MINI 5 Door" is positioned as a 5-door variant of the existing hatchback model. Deliveries in Europe are scheduled to begin this autumn.
