A Volkswagen Celebration for the Whole Family
Early on the morning of Saturday, April 26th, historic Volkswagen models began gathering from across the country at Fuji Speedway for the "Volkswagen Fest 2014," held for the first time in six years. Even at 6 AM, two hours before the gates opened, over 100 new and classic Volkswagens were neatly lined up, demonstrating how eagerly fans had awaited this event.
The venue was not limited to just parts of the Fuji Speedway, such as the paddock or the main course, but utilized the entire circuit, including the drift course and short circuit. Shuttle buses were even provided for attendees moving between areas.
This event's appeal lies not only in spectating but also in its abundance of participatory attractions. The main venue in Paddock A featured displays of new vehicles and attractions where visitors could experience automatic emergency braking. Attendees closely examined the latest Volkswagen models.
The event's charm also includes numerous attractions for children. Seeing families enjoy the day together was a heartwarming sight, likely a welcome aspect for fathers who are car enthusiasts. One of the game booths featured a slot car race powered by bicycles, where children engaged in spirited battles.
On the main stage, Piston Nishizawa, a renowned DJ and car enthusiast, hosted a talk show and managed the event's dedicated radio broadcast. The program was aired through the venue's public address system and could also be enjoyed on portable radios given to attendees. Acting as a special one-day FM station for the circuit, it enlivened the event all day with lively conversation and music.
Singer May.J also appeared on stage as a special guest, performing three songs including "Let It Go ~Ari no Mama de~." A large crowd, from children to adults, gathered, testament to her popularity.

Concluding with a Parade Lap
The pit area was transformed into a historic booth, showcasing models like the Golf of various generations and classic Beetles. Owners were seen reminiscing about their past cars in front of nostalgic Golfs. A special official merchandise booth was also set up in the pits, offering the customary 20-liter oil can filled with assorted items. It sold out instantly upon release, becoming a coveted, almost mythical item once again.
The "Street VWs FEST," Japan's largest event for air-cooled Volkswagens, was held concurrently in the event plaza, showcasing the deep and classic world of Volkswagen. Among the displays were rare single-license plate Beetles and uniquely customized vehicles, each worthy of close inspection. Additionally, a drag race utilizing the main course's straight was held as a special attraction. Spectators were captivated by the sight of old Beetles speeding down the course, kicking up white smoke.
Long queues formed for the on-site test drives of the latest models and the circuit experience rides with professional drivers in sports models like the "The Beetle Racer," indicating their immense popularity. Among the latest models available that day was the "e-up!," an electric vehicle not yet introduced in Japan.
The event culminated in a parade lap. The sight of numerous Volkswagens, old and new, filling the expansive main course of Fuji Speedway was breathtaking. Even more striking were the smiles radiating from the drivers participating in the parade.
Held under pleasant, clear skies, the event attracted approximately 8,000 visitors and a total of around 4,000 vehicles. Given how beloved this event is by so many fans, we hope it will be held regularly once again.
