Third Generation Pursues the Essence of MINI

The new MINI, which was first unveiled in Japan at last year'sTokyo Motor ShowJapan premiere of the new MINIhas now arrived in Japan. The third generation model features a slightly larger body size. However, MINI's identity is inherited in every detail of the design, resulting in proportions that are even more characteristic of MINI.

The body has been enlarged compared to the previous generation: length +98mm, width +44mm, and height +7mm. The wheelbase and front/rear tracks have also been extended. This not only improves driving performance but also increases cabin and luggage space. Notably, the luggage compartment has increased by 51 liters to 211 liters, enhancing usability.

MINI's design is characterized by its boxy body, the greenhouse (the glasshouse surrounding the vehicle), and the roof that appears to sit atop it. The third-generation new MINI faithfully inherits this tradition, with proportions that are instantly recognizable as a MINI. The hexagonal radiator grille, side scuttles, and round headlights, which symbolize MINI's essence, have been reinterpreted to emphasize details and accentuate MINI's unique world.

The headlights are LED type. LEDs are embedded within the light units to emit light in a ring shape, creating a new icon for the front fascia. The sporty "Cooper S" model features a differentiated sporty exterior, similar to the previous generation, with a honeycomb grille, aerodynamic front bumper, and rear under spoiler. Emblems indicating the "Cooper S" designation are also present on the grille and side scuttles.

Moving to the interior, while maintaining the characteristic MINI ambiance, the traditional center-mounted speedometer has been replaced by a display area. This area can be equipped with either a TFT LCD display or a large 8.8-inch color display, allowing for the operation of various vehicle functions, climate control, navigation, and the latest MINI Connected services.

The speedometer has been relocated to the steering column, directly in front of the driver. The new instrument panel features the speedometer in the center, with the tachometer to the left and the fuel gauge to the right. Furthermore, the key cylinder has been abolished in this model; as long as the car detects the key inside, the engine can be started using a toggle switch located on the center console.

Refreshed Engine

A significant highlight is the generational change and overhaul of the powertrain. The Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 192 ps at 4,700-6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 280 Nm from just 1,250 rpm. Like the previous generation, it features an overboost function that can temporarily increase torque to 300 Nm.

Of particular note is the introduction of MINI's first 3-cylinder engine in the Cooper. This 1.5-liter inline-3 turbo engine is a high-performance unit, producing a maximum output of 136 ps, surpassing the previous generation. Its maximum torque of 220 Nm is generated from a low 1,250 rpm. Similar to the Cooper S, it also features an overboost function, allowing for a temporary torque increase to 230 Nm. Both models are available with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The suspension system has also undergone significant enhancements, including the adoption of a multi-link rear axle. By reducing the weight and increasing the rigidity of suspension components, the pursuit of agile cornering and precise steering feel aims to further accentuate MINI's signature "go-kart feeling." The extended wheelbase and widened tracks also contribute to this.

Naturally, safety features have also been enhanced, with the availability of advanced systems such as the front collision warning, collision mitigation braking, and active cruise control.

The lineup consists of two types: the sporty "Cooper" and the high-performance "Cooper S." Sales will commence on Saturday, April 12th, at dealerships nationwide. Prices start at 2.66 million yen for the Cooper MT and 2.80 million yen for the AT. The Cooper S is priced at 3.18 million yen for the MT and 3.32 million yen for the AT. MINI has also announced plans to expand its network of new dealerships and invest in existing ones. This is expected to bring significant benefits not only to new customers but also to existing owners.

Additionally, a report from theoverseas test drive of the new MINI, held prior to its domestic launch,is also available, which we encourage you to read.
