New Mid-Size Sedan Ghibli Launched in Japan



MaseratiMaserati Japan has launched the new mid-size sedan, Ghibli. The legendary car is reborn as an E-segment sedan.

Equipped with a Newly Developed 3-Liter V6 Engine


Ghibli, meaning "hot, dry wind from the Sahara Desert" in Italian. Following the first generation designed by Giugiaro that took the world by storm in 1966, and the "Ghibli 2" released in 1992, this is the third generation.



The lineup consists of two types: the rear-wheel-drive "Ghibli S" and the all-wheel-drive "Ghibli S Q4." The newly designed Maserati 3-liter V6 engine was developed by "Maserati Powertrain" and is produced in cooperation withFerrariat their Maranello plant. It delivers a maximum output of 302kW (410ps) at 5,500rpm and a maximum torque of 550Nm at 1,650-5,000rpm. The 0-100km/h acceleration and top speed are 5.0 seconds and 285km/h for the "Ghibli S," and 4.8 seconds and 284km/h for the "Ghibli S Q4," respectively.

The body pursues improved safety and reduced weight, utilizing aluminum for the doors and hood. The body structure maintains a 50:50 weight distribution while employing a double-wishbone suspension at the front and a five-link suspension with the latest technology at the rear. This allows for the exquisite handling characteristic of Maserati.



The transmission is an 8-speed automatic jointly developed by ZF and Maserati. Five modes are available: "Auto Normal," "Auto Sport," "Manual Normal," "Manual Sport," and "I.C.E." for a more relaxed driving experience.



The design features a sharp coupe-style exterior that also evokes a connection with the "Quattroporte," complemented by a sporty interior. Prices, including 5% consumption tax, are 9.4 million yen for the "Ghibli S" and 10.1 million yen for the "Ghibli S Q4." Maserati aims for an annual production of 50,000 units by 2015.
