The Tiguan debuted in September 2008 as Volkswagen's first compact SUV. Previously, it offered the "Track & Field" for off-road driving, the dynamic "Sport & Style" with an aero-type front bumper, rear wing, and 1-inch larger diameter wheels, and the "R-Line" with further dress-up. With the announcement of the new model, the lineup has been streamlined to "Sport & Style" and "R-Line" only.
The first model to be released is the "Sport & Style." Regarding the exterior, it featuresthe second-generation Touarega horizontal front mask, symbolizing the design DNA of the latest Volkswagen vehicles.
The interior features Alcantara and fabric seats, with an optional leather seat package available in the new "Furioso Brown" color.
The engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI. Maximum output is 179 ps (132 kW), a 9 ps (7 kW) increase from the previous "Track & Field." Maximum torque remains unchanged at 280 Nm (28.6 kgm). Fuel economy, measured by the 10-15 mode, is 11.6 km/ℓ, consistent with the previous model. The new Tiguan also boasts impressive safety features. It comes standard with the latest ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) to prevent accidents, along with 8 airbags, including front and rear curtain and side airbags. Additionally, the "Driver Fatigue Detection System," introduced in theseventh-generation Passatlaunched in May 2011, has been added. This system detects a decrease in driver concentration through steering inputs and alerts the driver with an alarm and display, prompting them to take a break and prevent drowsy driving.
The new Tiguan is priced at 3.89 million yen. An electric panoramic sliding roof can be added for an additional 147,000 yen, and the leather seat package for 273,000 yen. The "R-Line" is scheduled for release in the spring of 2012.
