Featuring Technologies Based on EfficientDynamics
The BMW 523i Sedan and Touring, already certified for eco-car tax reductions and having proactively achieved the FY2015 fuel economy standards, now feature a new generation 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine with enhanced environmental performance.
Key aspects of this "new generation" engine include the active adoption of technologies based on the "EfficientDynamics" design philosophy, such as a twin-scroll turbocharger, high-precision direct injection, Double-VANOS for optimized intake and exhaust valve timing, and Valvetronic for stepless control of intake valve lift.
The 523i Sedan achieves fuel economy of 14.4 km/L, a 26 percent improvement over the previous model, while the 523i Touring records 13.6 km/L, a 31 percent improvement. Maximum output is 135 kW (184 ps) at 5,000-6,250 rpm, with a peak torque of 270 Nm at 1,250-4,500 rpm, enabling maximum torque delivery across a wide rev range.
535i Sedan Achieves 12.8 km/L
Furthermore, the 523i, along with the higher-spec 535i Sedan/Touring, now includes the Engine Auto Start/Stop function and ECO PRO mode. This ECO PRO mode optimizes engine response and shift timing, and efficiently controls the air conditioning and seat heaters to support fuel-efficient driving. It also displays tips for economical driving and information such as driving range on the Control Display and instrument panel, allowing drivers to improve fuel economy while enjoying their drive. Consequently, the BMW 535i Sedan has improved its fuel economy to 12.8 km/L, a 21 percent enhancement over the previous model, and the BMW 535i Touring to 12.4 km/L, a 17 percent improvement.
Through the adoption of these environmental technologies, the BMW 5 Series has achieved the "FY2010 Fuel Economy Standards +25%" and "Heisei 17 Emission Standards 75% Reduction Level (★★★★ Low-Emission Vehicle)". Certified as an eco-car tax reduction model, it qualifies for approximately a 75 percent reduction in acquisition tax and weight tax, and a roughly 50 percent reduction in the following year's automobile tax under the automobile green tax system.
Pricing starts at 6.1 million yen for the 523i Sedan and 6.4 million yen for the Touring. The 535i Sedan is priced at 8.4 million yen, and the Touring at 8.7 million yen. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in late October 2011.
