The Tiguan: Boasting High Stability and Cost Performance

The Tiguan debuted in Germany at the end of 2007 and holds a top sales position in the German SUV segment.
In the Japanese market, Volkswagen expanded the lineup by introducing the "Track & Field" in September 2008, followed by the "Sport & Style" with enhanced equipment and a stylish front face in March of the following year, and then the "R-Line" equipped with sporty R-Line exclusive interior and exterior in October. The model's features, such as "ease of driving due to its compact size," "high 4WD performance and high-speed stability," and "an accessible price despite being an imported car," were highly praised, leading to approximately 5,000 cumulative units sold within about two years of its launch.

Simultaneously with the announcement of the "Leistung," the R-Line's equipment was also reviewed, with specifications and equipment enhanced while keeping the price unchanged. A significant technical change includes the adoption of a newly developed, highly efficient dual-clutch transmission, the wet-type 7-speed DSG. This has resulted in a 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency for both models, now achieving 11.6 km/ℓ.

Newly Developed Wet-Type 7-Speed DSG

Volkswagen's signature DSG is featured in approximately 80% of models currently sold in Japan, including the Golf and Jetta. For its first application in the SUV segment, a new 7-speed DSG utilizing a wet multi-plate clutch has been developed.

This new DSG was developed for use in heavy vehicles and high-torque models, capable of handling a maximum torque of 600Nm, a maximum output of 275kW, and vehicle weights up to 3.2 tons. While inheriting technology from the base wet-type 6-speed DSG, new designs have been implemented for the 7-speed functionality.

The most significant change is the elimination of the reverse gear shaft and the adoption of a two-shaft structure for the input and output shafts. This has successfully avoided an increase in weight associated with the 7-speed configuration.

The "Leistung," named after the German words for "performance" and "efficiency," adopts the exterior and interior styling of the "Sport & Style." The powertrain features the same 2.0-liter TSI 125kW engine as the "Track & Field." The improved R-Line also features the 2.0-liter TSI engine.
