A New Standard for Hot Hatches
At this year's MarchGeneva Motor Show, it wasworld-premieredand has now been officially launched in Japan. In its home market, Volkswagen offers two models: the "GTI" with a 2-liter inline-4 engine producing 220ps, and the "GTI Performance," which uses the same engine but is tuned to deliver a maximum output of 230ps. For the Japanese market, the former has been chosen for introduction.
As you know, the "Golf" lineup includes the flagship "Golf R" at the top, but the "GTI" holds a special place. As a high-performance version, it has been cherished by performance-oriented drivers for many years, with the "GTI Edition 35" released to commemorate its 35th anniversary in the previous generation.
7th generation "Golf"is based on the latest "GTI," which meticulously incorporates refined sporty performance. As mentioned, the engine is a 2-liter inline-4 direct-injection turbo engine producing a maximum output of 220ps. Beyond increased power, it features a water-cooled EGR cooler integrated into the cylinder head. This efficiently cools the exhaust gas sent to the turbocharger while also contributing to improved fuel consumption. The transmission paired with this engine is the 6-speed DSG, exclusively for the Japanese market.
The reduction in body weight also brings benefits to both performance and fuel efficiency. The curb weight is6th generation "Golf GTI"was 1,393kg, while this model weighs 1,351kg, achieving a weight reduction of 42kg (a reduction of 10kg for the Japanese specification compared to the previous generation). Furthermore, improvements in aerodynamics, the standard stop/start system, and revised gear ratios contribute to a brisk 0-100km/h acceleration of 6.5 seconds, while fuel efficiency has been improved from the 6th generation "Golf GTI's" 13.0km/ℓ to 15.9km/ℓ (JC08 mode).
In keeping with the tradition of the "GTI," the exterior is clearly differentiated from the standard model. Distinguishing features include the "GTI" emblem, the red line on the front grille, red-painted brake calipers, dedicated dark red LED taillights, and dual chrome tailpipes.
The ride height, set 10mm lower due to the sports suspension, along with 225/45 tires and 17-inch "Brooklyn" alloy wheels, are also exclusive "GTI" equipment.
Inside, the seats feature the traditional "GTI" tartan check pattern. The sports steering wheel, shift lever, and stainless steel foot pedals are also exclusive "GTI" items. Additionally, this model offers Alcantara for the side bolsters and headrests of the sports seats. The seats and door trims can also be optioned with "Vienna" leather.
The car is also equipped with advanced safety features, including the newly developed "Progressive Steering" that allows for tighter turns with less steering input, the electronic differential lock "XDS+", "AAC (Adaptive Cruise Control)", "Front Assist" with "City Emergency Brake" function, and "Lane Assist." These features establish a new standard for hot hatches, not only in appearance and performance but also in safety.
The price is 3.69 million yen.A test drive report from Japan is also available, so please take a look.
