For Porsche E-Hybrids to Run Worldwide
Shanghai Motor ShowPorsche, which celebrated its world premiere at thePanamera S E-Hybridhas developed a charger for use with the model. The company also announced plans for custom solutions for installing charging infrastructure.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of this announcement is the "Porsche Universal Charger," which comes as standard equipment with the vehicle. By connecting the vehicle to an AC power outlet, it can be charged. The key feature is that by swapping the tip of the cable, it can be adapted to virtually any power socket (10 amps or higher) on Earth.
This means that users can charge their vehicles anywhere in the world, provided they have this charger and a cable with a connector shape compatible with the power socket in their destination country.
When purchasing a Porsche E-Hybrid model, customers will receive a "Porsche Charging Dock" from Porsche, to be installed on the wall of their home or garage before delivery. This dock is part of the standard equipment. In addition to managing charging, it features communication functions, allowing users to check the charging status in real-time via their smartphone. The Porsche Universal Charger (AC), charging cable, control unit, and vehicle cable are all housed within the upper part of the dock.
However, the installation of this dock appears to be the user's responsibility. Porsche recommends that for installations in home or workplace parking areas, users should engage a certified electrician accredited by "TÜV Rheinland" (a global technical, safety, and certification service headquartered in Germany).
The service content provided in Japan is the same, but since the charging voltage will be 200 volts DC, a 200-volt three-phase connector will need to be installed along with the charging dock. Furthermore, while it does not support CHAdeMO, this may not be a significant issue as it is not a purely electric vehicle.
Incidentally, the standard supplied cables include one for household outlets and one for industrial outlets. All other cables are considered optional. Porsche states that over 20 types of these optional cables are available.
A full charge takes 2 hours and 10 minutes using an industrial outlet, and 4 hours using a household outlet.
