New Engine Based on the "OM654" Used in the E-Class, Mounted Transversely
The A-Class arrived in Japan late last year as the fourth generation. It has evolved with a revamped platform and the integration of the "MBUX" interactive infotainment system, activated by saying "Hey, Mercedes."
The newly introduced model is equipped with the 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, the "OM654q." This engine is a transversely mounted version of the "OM654" already used in the C-Class and E-Class. In addition to the conventional exhaust gas treatment system, it features an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) and an additional SCR catalyst. As a result, it complies with regulations such as EURO6d, scheduled to take effect in Europe from 2020.
It delivers a maximum output of 110 kW (150 ps) and a peak torque of 320 Nm, driving the front wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The cylinder block, with a cylinder pitch of 90 mm and a cylinder wall thickness of 8 mm, has been made compact and lightweight using aluminum. Meanwhile, the use of materials with different expansion rates, such as steel pistons, has reportedly achieved over 40 percent friction reduction.
The turbocharger employs a variable turbine geometry, which Mercedes-Benz claims enables torquey acceleration across the entire rev range, from low to high RPMs.
The price is 3.99 million yen. Delivery is scheduled for June 2019.
