New Powertrain Models Added to the E-Class

On Friday, March 22, Mercedes-Benz Japan began accepting orders for three new models added to the E-Class Sedan and Station Wagon: the "E 200 Avantgarde" and "E 200 4MATIC Avantgarde" featuring new technology, and the new "E 300 Avantgarde Sport." Deliveries are scheduled to begin in June 2019.

New "BSG" Technology Adopted for Improved Efficiency and Performance

New engine models have arrived for the current E-Class, first announced in July 2016. The "E 200 Avantgarde" and its four-wheel-drive counterpart, the "E 200 4MATIC Avantgarde," are equipped with a new powertrain that combines a newly developed 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder turbo engine, the "M264," with "BSG (Belt-Driven Starter Generator)" and a "48V electrical system" for enhanced efficiency and performance.

The "M264" engine alone produces a maximum output of 135kW (184ps) and a peak torque of 280Nm. It features a twin-scroll turbocharger system and "Camtronic" for variable valve timing. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz's patented "CONIC SHAPE® processing" has been incorporated to reduce friction within the engine.

Additionally, the "BSG" motor, which acts as both a starter and generator connected to the crankshaft via a belt, and the "48V electrical system" store electricity generated through regenerative braking in a roughly 1kWh lithium-ion battery.

This system provides up to 160Nm of torque assist when needed, enabling smooth engine starts with minimal vibration, powerful acceleration, and swift gear shifts.

Meanwhile, the "E 300 Avantgarde Sport" is powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with the same system as the E 200. Compared to the previous "E 250," maximum output has increased by 35kW (47ps) to 190kW (258ps), and peak torque has risen by 20Nm to 370Nm.

Pricing starts at ¥7.2 million for the "E 200 Avantgarde" Sedan and ¥7.59 million for the Station Wagon. The "E 200 4MATIC Avantgarde" Sedan is priced at ¥7.44 million, and the Wagon at ¥7.82 million. The "E 300 Avantgarde Sport" Sedan costs ¥8.55 million, with the Wagon at ¥8.93 million.
