Transformed into a Fastback Style
The design of the new Peugeot "508" follows the concept car "EXALT" unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. This elegant, bold, and coupe-like flowing fastback style serves as the prototype for the new 508.
So, why did it transform from a sedan with a conventional trunk to a fastback with a hatch gate? Manabu Uemura, Product Planning Group Manager for Peugeot at Peugeot Citroën Japon, explains as follows.
"The current automotive market is experiencing a wave of diversification in powertrains and body types, with segments becoming increasingly granular," he stated. "The D-segment sedan, to which the 508 belongs, is a traditional and popular segment in the import car market, and it remains a very important market for us, holding approximately 10 percent share. However, the dominant force in the current market is entirely SUVs, and sales of existing D-segment sedans are not growing easily."
He further explained the market trend: "Customer interest in the D-segment is shifting from traditional sedans with trunks to dynamic and practical premium 5-door vehicles." The changing consumer needs are evident in the market, with the introduction of models like Volkswagen's "Arteon".
Therefore, "the 508 needed to break free from conventional concepts and possess expressive, strong individuality. The key point for this is the fastback style. This feature, with its low body line and beautiful curve from the roof to the rear end, creates a lower, more elegant, and sportier form than a typical sedan," he explained.

Radical Saloon
In terms of exterior, the vertical LED lights at the front immediately catch the eye. These are designed to resemble a lion's fangs, contributing to a bold and sporty front face. They also complement the low, long hood and flowing styling.
The rear view, on the other hand, features Peugeot's signature triple LED combination lamps, meticulously crafted with high quality.
To achieve a low and sporty design, frameless doors have been introduced. Simultaneously, a hatch gate has been adopted at the rear to ensure practicality. The platform "E-MP2," also used in models like the "DS7 Crossback", has resulted in a body that is 80mm more compact and 35mm lower than the previous generation. Despite a significant increase in equipment, the weight has been reduced by 20kg. The minimum turning radius has also been successfully reduced.
Two Engine Options: Turbo and Gasoline
Two engine types are available for the Japanese market models: a 2-liter clean diesel and a 1.6-liter PureTech gasoline engine with an increased output of 180ps. The transmission is the latest 8-speed automatic EAT-8, which has also been featured in the "308" and "3008". This transmission offers enhanced compatibility with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), electronic shift control, and a weight comparable to 6-speed automatics.
All models are equipped with electronically controlled active suspension, which controls the shock absorbers in real-time according to road and driving conditions to achieve optimal road holding. Additionally, drivers can manually select from five driving modes (Sport, Comfort, Eco, Normal, Manual) using a switch on the center console.
In terms of functionality, the hatchback conversion of the luggage compartment provides a wider opening, making it easier to load and unload items. Folding down the rear seats creates a flat space significantly larger than in the previous model.

Night Vision Also Equipped
As expected, the driving assistance features are comprehensive. Supported by various cameras, including a multifunction camera, radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, it provides all-around driving support.
Active Cruise Control and Lane Positioning Assist are standard on all models. These systems maintain speed and position within the lane, providing steering support. The sensors utilize a multifunction camera and millimeter-wave radar, and the system includes a stop-and-go function for traffic jams.
Night Vision, a rare feature in the D-segment, is available as a package option on higher trim levels. The system uses an infrared camera in the front grille to capture images up to approximately 200 meters ahead, displaying pedestrians or cyclists on the instrument panel. If a detected target is likely to cross the vehicle's path, the driver is alerted with a yellow frame. If the target approaches further and poses a higher risk, a red frame provides a further warning.
Additionally, it is equipped with all the major driving assistance functions currently offered by Peugeot, including Full Park Assist for parallel and perpendicular parking.
SW in Summer, Followed by PHEV and Higher Performance Models
Future additions include the wagon-type "508 SW," scheduled for introduction around the summer of this year. Furthermore, while the PHEV model was announced at last year's Paris Motor Show, it is planned for release in Japan in the near future.
At the launch event, Jean-Philippe Imparato, Executive Officer of Groupe PSA and CEO of the Peugeot brand, who was visiting Japan, announced, "We will be launching the new 508 globally within the next few months. Simultaneously, we will also unveil a supercar: the Peugeot Sport Engineered 508. Through this, we aim to deliver exceptional and remarkable equipment and performance, namely low emissions, high performance, and a new sensation." While details were not disclosed, the plug-in hybrid model boasts 400hp and AWD, achieving 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. It also achieves CO2 emissions of 49g/km, balancing environmental performance.
Imparato added, "This car will begin running on roads in Europe next year, and it is scheduled to arrive in Japan next year as well."
