The ID. Buggy: An Electric Reinterpretation of the 1960s Dune Buggy
In addition to the ID. Buggy and the new Passat, Volkswagen also presented the T-Roc R, the top-tier specification of the compact crossover T-Roc, and the Touareg V8 TDI, marking a total of four world premieres.
Among these, the ID. Buggy, the fifth model in Volkswagen's ID. series of electric vehicles, garnered significant attention. It offers a modern interpretation of the dune buggy concept that was popular in California in the 1960s.
The body measures 4,063mm in length, 1,890mm in width, and 1,463mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650mm. It features a style without a roof or doors. While a two-seater, it can be converted to a 2+2 configuration. The chassis, like other ID. series models, utilizes the MEB platform and houses a high-voltage battery. It produces 150kW (204ps) and 310Nm of torque, with a top speed electronically limited to 160km/h. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 7.2 seconds and has a range of approximately 250km.
The body is constructed from a combination of aluminum, steel, and plastic. The upper body section can be detached from the chassis, allowing smaller manufacturers and startups to design buggies tailored to specific national or regional characteristics. This initiative is underpinned by Volkswagen's announcement in early 2019 that it would offer its MEB electric vehicle platform to competing manufacturers.
Furthermore, Volkswagen also debuted the new, eighth-generation Passat. This model is characterized by its advanced features, including the 'Travel Assist' system for autonomous driving at all speeds and the 'Capacitive Steering' function for detecting driver's grip on the wheel.
Additionally, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, the Passat GTE, was also showcased. This model is capable of zero-emission driving, similar to an electric vehicle, for short durations.
The 89th Geneva International Motor Show is open to the public from Thursday, March 7th, to Sunday, March 17th.
