Porsche Unveils the 992 Model at the LA Auto Show

A Detailed Look at Its Clever and Qualitative Evolution

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Porsche "911" has evolved into the 8th generation 992 model. Kazuhiro Nanyo, who attended the unveiling ceremony and saw the actual car, reports on its details.

Qualitative Evolution Beyond Appearance

The floor was, as expected, crowded. I later heard that many journalists couldn't even fit into the press conference venue. Although there was no room to stand, I reconsidered and felt lucky just to get in. On November 29th, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Porsche had its booth in a space partitioned off like a "separate room" within the West Hall of the Convention Center. The unveiling of the new "911," codenamed 992, the 8th generation, had garnered immense global attention, even though a closed-door preview had already taken place the previous evening.

The blue and yellow cars unveiled at this LA Auto Show are both "Carrera 4S" models. Exterior features include not only the rear badging but also the large, oval muffler tips, with two on each side. The Carrera S has four round tips.

To state some specifications first, the exterior dimensions of 4,519mm (length) x 1,852mm (width) x 1,300mm (height) show a slight increase of 2cm in length and 2mm in height compared to the current 991 Carrera 4S (4,499mm x 1,852mm x 1,298mm), while the width remains the same. The current 991 model had a sleeker 1,808mm wide body for the rear-wheel-drive models, but the 992 will unify the basic body to the 4S specification even for the rear-wheel-drive models. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,450mm, and the curb weight has increased by 55kg, from 1,510kg to 1,565kg (DIN).

However, upon seeing the actual car, one gets the impression that it sits slightly lower, with the front fenders appearing more flared. Despite the rear wheels being upsized from 20 to 21 inches and the front tires from 19 to 20 inches, the overall height has only increased by 2mm, suggesting that the center of gravity has effectively been lowered. Incidentally, the front and rear tire sizes are 245/35ZR20 and 305/30ZR21, respectively, with no change in tire tread width from the 991 model. Nevertheless, the CD value has improved from 0.30 to 0.29, indicating that the sizing and geometry contribute to a qualitative evolution.

Furthermore, the 992's body is made of aluminum, and the roof of the exhibit car featured a carbon fiber panel. This approach aims to overcome the negative impact of increased weight from electrical systems, such as semi-autonomous driving modules, through body slimming and a lower center of gravity.

Porsche Really Is Incredibly Smart

The 2,981cc twin-turbo flat-six engine produces 450 PS at 6,500 rpm and 530 Nm of torque between 2,300 and 5,000 rpm, with an increase of 30 PS in output and 30 Nm in torque being notable. The peak torque range has shifted slightly higher, and with increased output, it suggests enhanced performance at the top end. It is equipped with a gasoline particulate filter and complies with Euro 6d standards. Another noteworthy detail around the engine is that the slits on the engine hood, a traditional detail of the 911, have been moved closer to the rear window.

Aerodynamically, airflow tends to become turbulent towards the rear of the body, so this repositioning likely aims to improve intake and cooling efficiency by drawing in fresh air from a position closer to the roof. This slatted grille also incorporates a newly vertical high-mount stop lamp. The horizontal rear combination lamps and garnish, popularized by the 991 and now emulated by many other cars, have become thinner and more streamlined with LED technology, emphasizing the horizontal line and extending further around the sides. This detail further accentuates the sense of width, even though the overall width remains the same.

Looking at the front, the headlight configuration and the shape beneath the bumper have been significantly altered. The daytime running lights, in addition to the thin LEDs within the bumper, illuminate as four-pronged points within the combination lamps, reminiscent of the "919 Hybrid." Matrix illumination is integrated above, below, to the left, and to the right of these four prongs.

The seemingly almost square opening in the front bumper is a departure from the common design in existing new cars, where two body-colored struts, like an F1 nose, suspend the lower part of the bumper or spoiler. The forward-facing camera, which likely houses modules for adaptive cruise control, is installed in a slightly recessed position within this black urethane part, where the license plate might offer some effect as a visor even while driving.

Incidentally, the corner sensors for collision avoidance are also embedded within this gray part, rather than on the body itself. This means that in the event of a minor scrape or impact, replacing the sensors or adjusting their calibration is likely to be easier. Seeing details like this makes one realize how truly smart Porsche is. After all, some manufacturers expect dealers to invest in calibration equipment or charge customers higher service fees for complicated procedures, and they do so without hesitation.

Timeless Machine

Regarding the interior, the detail that would likely surprise most 911 owners is the dashboard design, particularly on the passenger side. The reinforced overhangs and sharp edges evoke a sense of returning to the design of the 930 model, a departure from the softer ambiance of the 997 and 991 generations, which had previously abandoned this style after the 996 generation. However, this is not merely for aesthetic effect; it is a practical design choice to shield the 10.7-inch touchscreen, centrally located high on the dashboard, from window glare. Since the Porsche Communication Management, which includes navigation and vehicle settings, is operated here, visibility is prioritized.

Furthermore, a horizontal aluminum insert across the dashboard and the nearly flat center console emphasize a horizontal design theme. From here, the small, upright shift lever for the 8-speed PDK (a 7-speed manual version is scheduled for release next year) is positioned, along with three levers for dual-zone climate control and fan speed, and five toggle switches related to driving and chassis functions.

Excluding the steering wheel and turn signal stalks, these approximately ten levers, buttons, and dials are the only physical switches. Positioned above and below the air vents, the logic is that the upper controls relate to driving functions, while the lower ones pertain to comfort.

Within the instrument panel, the traditional tachometer, occupying the most prominent central position, retains its analog needle display, while the left and right clusters feature 7-inch HD monitors. By making four of the five gauges digital displays and intelligent, the amount of information that can be shown has been further enhanced. The reduction in physical switches and the intelligent integration within the clusters align with the design direction established in the Panamera and subsequent models. Incidentally, the design of the door panels is also significantly cleaner and more elegant compared to the 991 model.

CEO Oliver Blume stated that the United States remains the country with the highest sales volume for the 911 alone, and that "California and Porsche have a kind of love affair." While Detroit is the manufacturing hub of the automotive industry in the US, Los Angeles is undeniably the "unofficial capital of automobiles" where the automotive culture is most developed. California, with its history of embracing Porsches and other sports cars since the "356" era, also represents the future, having made a significant shift towards the adoption of alternative energy vehicles. The tagline for the 8th generation 911 unveiled there is "Timeless Machine."

Although the price is not yet determined, this significant 992 model has already appeared in the lineup on Porsche Japan's official website, and English brochures can be downloaded from the global site. Deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of next year.
