Two PHEV Variants and Enhanced Advanced Safety Features
The new V60 is a flagship station wagon that inherits the tradition of Volvo's popular 850 series, which appeared in the 1990s, and the successive V70 models. The exterior combines Volvo's new-generation design, characterized by T-shaped headlights inspired by Thor's hammer from Norse mythology and sharp shoulder lines, with the functionality expected of an estate. The body dimensions are 4,760mm long, 1,850mm wide, and 1,435mm high, featuring a more elongated profile that is 125mm longer and 45mm lower than the previous generation, along with a width reduced by 15mm, reportedly to accommodate Japan's narrower road conditions.
The acclaimed Scandinavian interior features front seats with the same structure as the premium 90 Series models. It is also equipped with the SENSUS infotainment system, which combines a 9-inch center display and a 12.3-inch driver display, an optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound audio system, a spacious luggage compartment with a capacity of 529 liters (1,441 liters when expanded), and a hands-free opening/closing rear tailgate.
The powertrain lineup includes one gasoline engine and two types of PHEVs (plug-in hybrids) with different outputs. The Drive-E 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine "T5" produces a maximum output of 187 kW (254 ps) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. The "T8 TWIN ENGINE AWD," which combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder supercharged direct-injection engine with an electric motor, delivers a maximum output of 233 kW (318 ps) + 65 kW (87 ps) and maximum torque of 400 Nm + 240 Nm for powerful performance. The "T6 TWIN ENGINE AWD" offers a maximum output of 186 kW (253 ps) + 65 kW (87 ps) and maximum torque of 350 Nm + 240 Nm, pursuing both performance and high efficiency.
The transmission is an electronically controlled 8-speed automatic. The gasoline model is front-wheel drive. The PHEV models are equipped with an electronically controlled AWD system that combines the engine and electric motor to drive all four wheels. Drivers can also select between high-efficiency hybrid and EV driving modes depending on the driving conditions.
In terms of safety, all models come standard with over 16 types of advanced safety and driver-assistance features under the "IntelliSafe" system. Among these, the "City Safety (Collision Avoidance and Mitigation with Full Auto Brake)" now includes a new "Oncoming Traffic Detection" function. If a collision with an oncoming vehicle is unavoidable, the system activates a collision warning, pretensioners for the front seat belts, and automatic braking simultaneously, reducing impact speed by up to 10 km/h to mitigate occupant injuries. Combined with the existing "Oncoming Lane Mitigation" and "Intersection Support (Oncoming Vehicle Detection when Turning Right)" functions, this enhances safety by avoiding or mitigating collisions with oncoming vehicles, which are a major cause of fatal traffic accidents in Japan.
Furthermore, the V60 offers peace of mind with a general warranty program that provides unlimited mileage for five years from the new vehicle registration date. Pricing ranges from 4.99 million to 5.99 million yen for the T5. The T6 TWIN ENGINE AWD is priced at 7.49 million yen, and the T8 TWIN ENGINE AWD is 8.19 million yen. Deliveries for the T6 and T8 models are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019.
